Sponsorship Questions

Local Gamestop employees called & told me that the Gamestop headquarters want me to talk about being sponsored, but I think it's a trap.I don't want to run into no trap or nothing just to promote them & then have that take me away from school. I would rather hear about this from somebody who knows more about the gaming industry & tournament plays than somebody I don't know. I told some of my members in church to keep me in mind, but then after the service, I had a few people saying "It's bad for kids", "It's a scam & that they're trying to use me to promote them", & "I didn't need to play games competitively & focus on my work". Nonetheless, when school isn't in the way & over the summer, I will try to be at tournaments around the area.I don't want games to come between my schooling & they never have, & I will speak to them about the sponsoring and ask questions, but will you fill me in with the sponsorship? Cause I feel like this is suspicious. I feel like they're setting me up for failure.​

Assuming this is legit, as an ex-GS employee, I'd say stay away from it. That company is bad news. But you never know, could be a good deal. I'd say to try talking to sponsored players and ask them what their contracts are like. No one seems to be sponsored more in fighting games than MVC and SF players so I'd suggest trying to ask around SRK or post to some twitter feeds for someone like Gootecks, UltraDavid, James Chen, Clockwork, they seem to be very supportive of community members with questions. Those are just some ideas off the top of my head, hopefully you can get a more informative answer from some players here.
