8GB GDDR5 is absolutely nuts. 6x BD ROM hopefully means no installs. The suspend play feature is amazing too, and I'm in love with the DS4's new thumbsticks and triggers

What did everyone think of the reveal? I was shocked they didn't show a single Japanese game, just some tech demos from Squeenix and Crapcom (one of which everyone and their grandma has already seen!) Would've liked to see the actual console we're supposed to be hyped about too...

The only companies on there that interest me are Kadokawa, Arc Sys, CyberConnect2, and Acquire. Reasons:

Kadokawa - Motherloving Suda51 <3
Arc Sys - I just love BlazBlue and Guilty Gear.
CyberConnect2 - The new JoJo fighter looks amazing and Asura's Wrath is my second all-time favorite game ever made.
Acquire - GIVE US A FREAKING TENCHU 5 ALREADY .V.

Nothing to laugh at really. I think that's more than good enough for a console, considering high-end gaming pc's easily cost over a grand.

I couldn't care less about the graphics or gimmicky bullshit. I'm just glad to know that the system is developer-friendly. That'll keep a lot of game creators excited about the console game development instead of shifting over to the mobile crowd.

2) Graphical capabilities still far inferior to modern PCs

So yeah, I think it looks like shit that I'll be forced to buy to play new console exclusives. Kinda like the PS3, actually.

As for the PS4, I was supremely underwhelmed. I DID like the streaming functionality, the ability to take over a friend's game to help them out, and the media sharing. Other than that, I have plenty of nitpicks and things I think are flat-out stupid. The touch pad on the controller is unbelievably dumb and will lead to a lot of launch games using it in disruptive and gimmicky ways. The share and options buttons, in particular the options button, seem way too easy to hit by accident if the controller stays similar in size to previous versions. Actually, I just dislike the controller in general.

The streaming shit I couldn't possibly care less about since I don't like to be stuck on the wrong end of multiple services having the potential to fail. My ISP could fuck up, my physical media could fuck up, and/or PSN could fuck up and then I'm without those capabilities. Streaming a game is great in theory and not so much in practice. Cool when it all works flawlessly, but US ISPs are generally less than reliable and that's why I always have my mobile hotspot provisioned for my phone.

The games they showed off were generally impressive on a technical level. Killzone looked good but I've never really gotten into the games because of how they feel. I have played them all, though. Knack looks fun but I really question the wisdom of showing that off to kick off the game section of the reveal, though the developer who demo'd it and talked about the PS4 itself before that demo was phenomenal. We need more of him on stage and less suits.

I could go on but I'm supposed to be getting ready to move tomorrow. I may or may not get one, but I'm leaning towards "No" at the moment. E3 is the make or break point.

I'm pretty much banking on Destiny and the "official" Dust 514 client to give me a good reason to get a PS4 initially. That and the 3D modeling.

The Dust PS3 beta client is very bare bones at the moment compared to the high-res gameplay trailers they have shown in the past, and I can see why it is so stripped down and clunky now. With the major power increase coming so soon, they must have planned the official release on that platform from the get-go. They DID say they were looking for at least 10 years of lifespan on that game in terms of free content so I have to wonder how much of a facelift it's going to receive.

And Destiny is a wildcard, but it's Bungie and it just sounds unique enough to be fun.

The launch of both consoles will happen within weeks of each other so I don't think there will be much need for anything beyond considering which controller you like better. Both online services will likely cost next time out too as opposed to just Live right now. The two machines are rumored to be very similarly spec'd and since the PS4 rumors turned out to be mostly accurate I'm betting the new Xbox will be right around the same level. Since I prefer achievements and Live (which I'm paid up for through like 2015 lol) I'll only buy on Microsoft's console.

Sony will want to get out in front this time after the last round didn't pan out with waiting and Microsoft will want as small a gap as possible to go for a repeat. This is gonna be close.

I guess in regards to the gamecube I would have a foggy memory. I was but a 13 year old around that time. I seem to recall the purple cube and toy-looking controller being referred to as "Gay Crap" from my friends at the time, so that fell off my radar pretty quickly.

Oh, the early 2000's! Man if you were a teen, damn near everything was gay.

It had a handle too, so that's definitely something my friends and I would have called the very same. That's still the go-to insult for most people from our generation and older. I'm not sure when it became a synonym for "fucking stupid" but that's how it mostly gets used. Most people that say it aren't even talking about a person or attacking someone's orientation. Well, young kids now do but that's different.

I think Louis C.K. has a pretty long stand up about that very topic.

Cyber, I've been hearing that the nextBox's dev kits are not really all that developer-friendly, whereas Sony's kits are pretty much built like PC's. And just from rumors alone, the 720 is sounding a hell of a lot gimmicky-er (?) than the PS4 with so much built around Kinect and that XBox TV thing. No used games for Xbox either I hear.

Gimmicks.. The damn mobile gaming industry is fucking up consoles. I've said it before, but the console makers and game developers need to realize that console-gamers and iPhone-gamers are two distinct groups of consumers.

Personally, my interest in the PS4 went crashing down when they came out and said there would be no backwards compatibility in any form (PSN included). The only reason I'd buy a PS4 over the 720 now is because I have a Vita and remote play for every PS4 game sounds fucking awesome.

Sony's made similar promises before, though.

I don't understand why people are upset at the prospect of losing nothing. All you were going to get from gamestop if you traded it in was like 50 dollars in credit from a system you invested hundreds into.

There are so many rumors out there on what the next Xbox will and won't support that it's not funny. Personally I don't buy used games nor do I borrow them from people so that's a non-issue. As for programming for it, aside from the x64 architecture it supposedly uses the rest of the specs are near identical. We'll see shortly I'd imagine. I'm thinking we should hear something within the next 6-8 weeks. Maybe at GDC, though I'm banking on their own event. Microsoft has me hooked in pretty well with the Windows ecosystem so it'd take some monumental fuck ups to get me to drop them. I'm open to getting both consoles, though. Just need more coaxing from Sony.
