the last console i did this with was the original xbox but that was because i owned an xbox in a country that didn't have xbox live, but i never felt like i was losing out on much. but in this new age of day 1 patches, dlc for days, constant updates, and releasing half finished games with the thought of fixing it later, i couldn't imagine owning an off the grid ps4 or xbox 1

Hell I think the Xbox One itself requires an Update to undo that god awful DRM Policy that almost ruined the Console before launch.

The Wii u had something similar where u needed to download some 1 gb day 1 patch just to use the dam thing. No console gaming for you unless you have high speed internet young man! That and u live in a country where they offer the gaming network necessary to do so.

No. The industry has steadily gone to shit over the last ten years by focusing more and more on an always-online state. In addition to the issues you mentioned, there's also the fact that many games nowadays are too big to even fit on a disc, so you literally can't play without downloading the rest of it. Not to mention that some games don't even get a physical release.

Plus, I don't think that you can even use an X1 without connecting it to XBL to create or recover an account, since they took away the ability to have offline accounts. I'm not sure if this is also true with the PS4.

But this means no longevity for the system at all. Once the servers eventually go down, it'll be completely useless. Nothing but a laughably oversized paperweight.

we all might as well become PC gamers at that point. that or Nintendo fans since they seem to be the only console maker who want their hardware to be inseparable from their games
