Not just you, the genre is dying because today's horror games mostly consist of jumpscares instead of actual horror.

RE2 Remake is looking promising. Felt like RE7 brought a good bit of that "You never feel 100% safe at any point" as well until you get far enough that most things stop being a threat. I've been wanting RE2 done in the style of RE4 for a while and it looks like Capcom is delivering that in aces.

It sucks. I miss those PS2 era games. Had so much fun with Fatal Frame and Obscure. FF still exists but i don't have money on every console..

I never got into RE until i played the fifth one. I do kind of want to try RE2 remake. Does it follow the first one though? I haven't played the first one so i may be confused if i start from 2.

You dont have to play RE1 to follow what's going on with 2. The Resident Evil series is good about skipping between sets of characters for each iteration. RE1 follows Chris and Jill, 2 is about Leon and Claire. The RE series has always gotten a lot of its tension and anxiety from limited resources and inventory space (You cant carry enough healing items or Ammo to fight every Zombie you come across)

Atleast that was the case before they went pure action mode after 4 and just did away with the traditional horror factor of 1-3

Hey, Chisa! You should definitely try RE2 Remake when it comes out. It looks veeeeery promising.

Horror games have been a dying genre for over a decade now. It's not a video game genre that appeals to a large quantity of gamers such as FPS, battle royale or action adventure games such as Uncharted or God of War. With that said RE7 is a solid horror game, and REmake 2 does indeed look fantastic thus far.
