  • Just completed Tales of Arise. Overall I'd probably say that it's the best Tales game easily. However...

Tales of Arise has a massive advantage over Berseria or earlier games (including Vesperia and prior) in terms of technical prowess & design, QoL and a generally more mature tone to the experience. On one hand the overworld is missed, but after playing games like FFX or FFXIII it's not really surprising that ToAr doesn't have a large overworld. ToAr is a genuine AAA game.

When you have such a huge upgrade in graphics within a new engine, you're likely not going to get a large overworld in the game unless the "open world" is basically the focus (Such as in FFXII or FFXV for instance).

To be fair to ToAr, I'm actually looking forward to the next Tales game if they can maintain the quality standard set forth, though I think Bandai Namco's Tales teams need better writers by this point if they want the franchise to take the next step (or to genuinely surpass Final Fantasy in general in terms of appeal).
I'm still in awe at how epic this cutscene is. It's hard to believe that this game is over 11.5 years old now:

Maybe they should take another crack at making a feature length CG movie. I know they'd still be terrified to do it after Spirits Within, but that's too bad because I think the 2nd time could work, especially now that the tech has improved so much.

I would love that, but Spirits Within was a huge commercial bomb. Incredibly expensive movie that looked incredible. I rewatched it relatively recently and the tone & visuals are something that I'd like to see more in animation film (i.e more mature tones and visuals, and less cringey tropes).

    Totally agree.
This review right here is why I can't take IGN's reviews seriously:

@DestructionBomb Can't stand Tristan at all. He's pretty much the type of gamer archetype that I hate. Couldn't get through the video and just fast forwarded to the end and wasn't surprised. The fact that IGN has him basically review all the Yakuza/Judgment games is insult to injury and downright disrespectful to the series. I tolerated the last reviews, but it's just ridiculous now.

I think IGN seems to have this weird history of having games reviewed by people who shouldn't be. An RPG reviewed by someone who doesn't like RPGs, etc. Can't take the entire history of game review ratings seriously at all, probably....
Hey, what are people's thoughts on this?

Possibility for PC being the main platform for FG's at tournaments?

Yeah the thing mostly is that fighting games are an entirely different breed when it comes to that factor. PC gaming in the long run were more beneficial for game genres such as shooters where they use maximum processing to get the best gameplay possible. Tournaments for them literally run at 120-144hz.

But I play mainly on PC and would ditch Windows if I could, so I hope the Steam Deck ends up being a success.

EDIT: Yeah, fighting games have the advantage of not requiring that much juicy to run unless poorly optimized.

Fighting games on the other hand not so much yeah, considering you don't need maximum processing for best impact aside from using monitors to get the least amount of lag possible. But the demand for PC is -actually there- for shooters, whereas for FGs you don't necessarily see it because you have to literally convince events to do it.
