Xtreme and Xtreme 2 did damage the image but the overall fan service and insane amount of DLC in 5 did hurt it as well. But nowadays its a bandwagon and considered cool to downplay DOA in general
Technically it would be taken more seriously by default if Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball never existed, however it would still be a pretty niche fighting game series. Instead of getting titty-shamed, DOA would receive similar treatment to Killer Instinct in the FGC as the "Rock-Paper-Scissors" fighter due to the ability to hold/combo breaker out of combos.
Essentially a lot of people in the FGC dislike DOA due to the ability to "hold" out of stun combos, because these people just like to autopilot their offense with abusable launchers. The whole "titty fanservice" bullshit is commonly used as an excuse for why people don't want to give DOA a fair chance.
To put things in perspective, DOA3 sold incredibly well for itself (1.5+ million units sold), and on a system that got completed eclipsed by the PS2 sales wise. Though from DOAXBV onwards, DOA's sales have been pretty lukewarm in comparison (apart from the various iterations of DOA5 combined). DOAXBV's dumb-as-fuck commercials in the West buried DOA's reputation.
