300 life makes fights way too long. Small combos are meaningless same as throw punishment. Wall combos mean shit as well for the most part and characters that deal little damage and need a lot of hits, like Honoka, are negatively affected.
I mean, it's funny because in the DOA2U and DOA4 days (when 240 was default), people were really pissed at players who opened online lobbies in 300 life. Now that 300 is default, they get pissed at me when I say I like 240 more.
300 HP is miles better, especially when you factor in environmental damage and almost everything connecting on CH. I found that you're more likely to lose a round as a result of a lucky attack on 240 HP than 300 HP. In its current state, DOA5LR is not balanced for 240 HP. Stages like Home become broken on 240 HP too.
Well I strongly disagree. My local community has gotten much better now that we're playing in 240. When we used to play in 300 nothing mattered to us and it felt like DOA4 matches.
I used to play on 240 HP and it does force you to tighten up your gameplay, but after a while people just stuck to cheap combos & throws since they dealt out more damage. Holds also do a fuckload of damage. In my experience it's a lot harder for a lesser skilled player to win on 300 HP than 240 HP.
Yeah I can understand part of that but it's been a while since I completely switched to 240 and I've learned to play in a much better way than in DOA5 and 5U. Now I do whatever the fuck I can to avoid getting punished, held or hold randomly.
Because I was a dedicated SoulCalibur player for many years, I don't see stages as broken. Stages as well as and specific locations inside them are just more or less risky, so I just play more or less environmentally safe accordingly. In some edge situations, only a bunch of moves become a choice... So I don't consider stages in the 240/300 discussion.
On the other hand, I enjoyed a lot the flashy and scaring style of 240. 2 errors are enough to lose the round. A strong shot of adrenaline. But last year, I found myself facing highly skilled players a lot of times in the London/Paris/Netherlands competitive scene, always using 300. No match was boring at all. Even many times there were long adrenaline rushes instead just shots!
Sometimes I think what TN decided (300) makes some sense for the competitive community. It separates low/mid/high-skilled players much clearer. In 240, a medium-skilled player could -from time to time- get the proper 2 errors needed to beat a highly skilled one. It would be a very rare occurrence in 300. Also, a low skilled one could occasionally bet a medium, but not in 300. Only few ones will remain champions.
However, sometimes I think 300 is not that good, because such separation could be currently pushing newcomers apart from the competition as soon as they realize they don't really stand any chance... I will choose between 240 or 300, when I get sure which setting is truly better for the competitive community. If I had to choose right now, I would chose 240 'cuz I care the volume of competitors in tournaments the most.
240 HP is great for practicing the fundamentals of combat but I'd never run another tournament in it because it allows cheap combos and lucky reads to do too much damage. Like you implied Tulkas, it allows lesser skilled players to net wins against higher skilled players.
I made the realization that 300 HP is better overall when I noticed that 2D fighters almost always have really high health, thus making it harder for lesser skilled players to win.
