Sidesteps are a relatively underutilized tool in DOA5LR, but IMO the way how they're designed in DOA makes them to overly risky. They should be a bit more similar to the SS's implemented in VF5FS, which have a better balance to its Risk/Reward.
They still are good in certain situations, cause if the opponent doesn't use a move that's tracking(be that a fully tracking move or not),you can start an offensive, even if a few seconds ago you weren't the aggressor, and the attacks from a SS will mostly put you in Critical Stun.
It depends Force. There are characters that have godlike SS attacks (Hayate) and characters that suffer against them (Gen), but i understand your point, you can't just mash on it like a maniac, it has to be a hard read.
Yeah, it's intended to be a hard read, which of course is a risk unless you know exactly what you're gunna SS. Hayate's special sidestep is a FreeStepDodge technique and has better evasive capability than a normal SS. Christie's SS is also godlike lol.
