Play offline with my bf at a pretty consistent rate. We don't really like doing stuff in the lab. We would much rather read guides or watch offline tournaments.
I read a lot of blog posts about fighting games, i don't work as much in my DOA knowledge as i work on my fundamental play, other than that, MU training, a lot of it.
I can't level up because I don't have the luxury of offline gameplay in my area and forever will be the the scrubbiest Leifang player in the multi verse.
You also want to practice a few stun set ups for BnBs so you can grow more comfortable with starting and getting to Critical Stun Threshold. Because later on you'll start learning to experiment with threshold on your own to see how things work out.
And always pick and play a character that suits you and your preferences. Being recommended certain characters to learn the game with is fine. But if you have interest in a particular character, you will find more enjoyment learning the game that way.
Also try to learn and understand what this game's triangle system is about. Stick with the basics and pace yourself until you feel you're ready for something new.
That's generalizing it, but it's what I normally tell players I get to speak with. Character or other in-game specifics I ask what their interests are in particular to give a better answer.

Also, trying to game's tutorial and learning the useful fundamentals such as Stagger escapes can really bring you a long way. At least it did from me
