People actually used the free Windows X upgrade? I just ignored it, because I had a feeling it was going to be terrible.

I did the same until my motherboard tanked and I was forced to buy a new computer. Which now, obviously, all come with Win 10.
I could have tried to salvage the old one, but looking at the bigger picture down the road, it would have made no sense.

I like Windows 10
I got a Taste of Windows 10 a few months back and I just couldn't get used to it.
I'm going to revert back to Windows 7 until my software forces me to deal with Windows 10.
