The thing about the "tits and ass" thingie with DOA is that it's a typical Japanese anime cultural thing. They have big tittied characters commonly in almost anything anime related including most Japanese fighting games. The whole "BOOBS" thing was never really a DOA thing, but the shallow Western society made it seem like it was. (Will admit that TN's marketing didn't really help matters...)
Alright I hate to be that guy and not exactly defending SF and Tekken here, but look:
SF and Tekken has never used bikini nor breast physics for profitable outcomes. DOA however, has. This is not something for justification just because other fighters followed a similar idea.
If Tekken and SF has done poorly in sales and had to use bikini and other cosmetics for good sales then it would of made more sense on the topic and I would of agreed completely. Those two games never went that route for big profitable demands though. Again, not actually defending any, but just pointing that out.
Basically what I'm saying is, DOA can't play victim over something that was never really there from other fighters, or that was never their main focus with DOA getting shunned for it.
They didn't go down that route. It's an "addition" to it's current route because their marketing team knows that people buy the games for it's current route. Simply because it's people, positive people as well.
Their sales would be the least affected because their current route compensates for it.
Soul Calibur and King of Fighters still reign supreme in terms of fanservice, though. Still never understood why its DOA that got the rep (Pre Last Round dlc, anyway. Now doa DOES deserve all the bad rep)
@DestructionBomb It is true they put more emphasis into it as their series. What im saying is that a lot of people act like the boob physics and swimsuits and breast sizes alone are the reason they dont wanna take it seriously or play it, even though some did complain with tekken, youknow the majority will let whatever they do slide because again ''iconic'' so im pointing out how blindly hypocritical some can be
Even in old games there are some breast physics in characters and risque costumes. It always baffles me when people talk like fanservice is some recent thing, especially in anime, and like its ''ruining it'' when if you actually look at older anime theres still plenty, albeit not as good cause of old animation and such.
DOA5, DOA5U, DOA5LR's, etc. DLC didn't really do that much for its reputation, because the average gamer/general public doesn't follow the DLC of niche games (or most DLC in general). I.e. your perspective for DOA5 would not be any worse than DOA4's for example. What really hurt DOA's reputation are the DOAX games and the general FGC's belief that DOA is an "illegitimate, button-mashing, RPS, titty-fighter".
These general perceptions are not helped by the DOA community's relative lack of productive content compared to something like Tekken. I.e. too much ryona bullshit and not enough gameplay & character tutorials or high level gameplay exhibitions.
really doesn't help that the reason most people dismiss DOA is because they dont like how the hold system means they have to use their brain instead of just facerolling memorized combo inputs like most other fighters.
@Argentus - Yes, however look at the basis of the game within KOF and Soul Calibur. KOF specifically has the least amount of focus when promoting the game. Promoting the game of it's core rather than the fanservice. Fanservice can apply to just getting characters etc.
@Princeofhalcyon - That's not a company problem to be fair. That's a "human mentality" or rather "Player/FGC mindset".
The issue here is that people are comparing two things that should not be compared to. What wounded the DOA series was the DOAX series that created this pointed time and that TN added some elements from DOAX into the fighting genre as part of the addition of cosmetics and DLC.
There are multiple reasons why people do not like DOA. One of the reasons is the system behind it. Mostly towards the tournament players (some are ridiculous reasons, some are genuine reasons). Another reason is the credibility as a fighter with the content. The final resulting outcoming is that you might as well dislike both at the same time.
