Yeah new characters are always banned for a month after their release so people can learn the character so there's no match unfamiliarity in the equation
Actually they do that because since they don't know how to balance characters, they're afraid to make something too broken, so give 1 month for people to try out and put "proper" patching.
@Sotherius That's not the reason. It's for match up relations and users who don't have access to the character etc. People get steamrolled in past tournaments simply because they get hit from unknown setups. Very rare to see cases from what you mentioned, but it's mostly from match up relations.
In tournaments they want to lower the character unfamiliarity from carrying the player till the end in beginning days for release. However after a month or two, they predict that you have enough time or so to see what the character can do already.
Except that that ban was only implemented in NRS games after a certain character got released in MKX and turned out too broken and won the tournament next week. And i'm yet to see other games do that kind of ban.
NRS forums looked at Star Fire's frame advantages and possibility, the character has tons of unsafety and recovery etc. NRS did not drop the ball on that one to call off character bans based off character ability.
They call bans due to unfamiliarity or non-accessible means. Fighting games these days limits that, now where even the devs themselves will tell you if the character is allowed or not.
Yeah starfire from what I hear is a set up character, she's not scary at all imo. They're just doing the general rule that a new character is banned a month, same thing happened to Honoka, Naotora, and Mai, Mai being the most threatening XD
