To that: I would argue, there's no better method for gaining a feel for a character than using them. I do agree that it's important to spend your time wisely (I too will be using guides, like the one this website has on it's Google Drive). It's not important to learn EVERYTHING about a character...

After my experiences online this past weekend, getting slaughtered by a Phase-4 (a character I spend virtually no time with or against), it became clear to me that I need to spend a lot more focused time on the rest of the cast. All this on top of my Tekken training too. v_v;

Got slaughtered by a Phase-4. Once they started that teleport game I was finished. Then again, I spend absolutely no time on Phase-4, so I deserved it. xD
