KOF has always been SNK's very own "Smash Bros" since its got characters from a ton of their past games. Mai/Terry/Andy from Fatal Fury, Ralph/Clark from Metal Slug, Athena/Kensou from Psycho Solider, Ryo/Yuri from Art of Fighting etc.

DOA2 and 3 were more on the serious side of things. TN tried to focus on the serious aspect with 6 but failed.
