Not sure how to deal with a mirror match, I try to go with punishing opponents whiffs but he/she just rushes me down, what do I do?

It's so frustrating, I'm new to DOA in general and when I play online (mainly against Kasumi and Ayane) I have trouble attacking them after my blocks, I main Hitomi and I've been losing every fight so far and only won a small few of them :( any help would be greatly appreciated

I want to main Hayate and I'm not sure how to start, I don't know how combos work in this game etc etc etc

I chose this over TT2 because the fighting looks fun, I wanna main Hayate, sooo...any tips for a beginner?
