Arcade stick gate query

I've read a lot on forums about not riding the gate on an arcade stick. Most people agree that when performing circular motions this is bad practice. However, resting on the gate is generally deemed ok for sustained blocking/crouching or charging.

I've found I bump the gate a lot. It's difficult not to overshoot, especially in the heat of a match. Is this a habit I need to train out of myself or is it acceptable? Should the goal be to never make contact with the gate besides the exceptions I mentioned in the first paragraph? Thanks

There are four triggers, and the rest of the possible contact points are bolted down plastic.

In terms of execution, yeah, I guess you can train for precision by hitting those four triggers and only those four triggers. I never personally cared to do so myself.

The reason it is bad is you dont have to travel the whole way around to hit the micro switch. Your performing unnecessary movements. By learning to play with out the gate you have better control over your actual movements.

or just move to a Korean crown stick.. They dont use gates. I think Hori makes some as well. They use a rubber garment around the base of the stick. It will travel till the switch pushes back

Thanks for the advice both of you. I've already got used to bumping into the gate but I would rather unlearn a bad habit now.

Mr. Wah: Do you use a square gate? I know this is supposed to be the best for diagonals but I'm finding them tricky. 33p/33k in particular. I use a Mad Catz TE Round 2 (no mods) and Daigo grip.

Tenren: Did you find any particularly effective ways to practice? Would you say your execution is better because of it?

I use square, and I use Guile in SF4.

I can never find the diagonals on an octagonal.

i started on a octa gate then moved to a square. Its easy to learn not to hit the sides on it. I play on a Korean crown now which has no sides so you have to learn a lot faster not to travel that far. Really the only way to relearn is just be aware of it. When i went to the Crown stick I played threw combo & move training over and over. Being sure to pay attention of how i was moving the stick while doing certain things and picking up on when I hit the switch and when I went to far. I had a week to get use to it before SCR. I was able to still do pretty well but did have a problem doing some throw and what not. But i as pretty confident in my play by then

I've used, square, diamond and octagonal gates. Ball and stick long and regular. My preference is square and long stick.

I like to play with 1-2 fingers curled and resting on the case under the ball. Square is for the same reason Mr. Wah stated.

I feel I am gradually getting better. Advanced throws aren't really possible at the moment as I keep missing a direction somewhere for fear of hitting the gate. The hardest motions are those involving double tapping a direction.
