Can DOA finally be taken seriously?

Mai is one character out of the whole female roster. Everyone plays MK for the fatality/gore. Darkstalkers isn't as popular as it should be, VF is more classy than any and SF well...is SF. You can't compare any other game to DOA considering how far doa have gone compared to those, and not to mention the game became popular from it's sexual content. The only game that come close is Soul Calibur, which I don't even like.

This reply sounds to me like you've already made up your mind. You're making excuses for the other games.
I almost exclusively play female characters in video games and I'm glad to have as many choices as the regular burly dude players (+ eliot lol). From a feminist standpoint DOA is ahead of the curve in that regard, and no one is being forced to choose bunny or bikini costumes.
Gameplay is what decides if DOA can be taken seriously and I think it's well on its way.:) DOA5 is not DOAX <not that I think there's anything wrong with DOAX, but that's just me>

I already made up my mind? And what is that? I haven't really clearly gave my oppinon at all and yet everyone assume how I think. This topic wasn't about me, but the general thoughts on doa. I expect people to be more mature about the discussion. I don't know what there is to get offended by?

Also I'm not making excuses about anything. I'm just telling it how it is. If anything everyone is making excuses for DOA. If you like the fan service just say so no need to sugar code because you feel looked down on. It's not just about the bikini and such, either. What about the doa4 endings? Which were pretty bizarre. No one said anything about DOAX and I also mainly use female characters in video games. So what?

You're looking one for the entire genre with cheap excuses and characterizing DOA because they market it.

judging by what we've seen so far the gameplay seems pretty solid(hopefully). They seem to still use fan service to sell to the casual? Am I the only one who wish they would do away with this? I really don't care to see a character in a bikini in a fighter. I'm sure it's something that will turn some people off, too. People would just look at it as a hentai. Just wondering everyone oppinon.

I'm not offended in any way, and I DO like DOAX. There were a number of examples posted expressing a differing opinion from your original post. You say they are making excuses, but you brush their examples aside and say that's not bias. Story mode and endings are what isn't taken seriously though.
And thank you for informing me that "I feel looked down on". I never woud have noticed that  =P

Yes. So I've pretty much stated the game can do without, so what's wrong with that? My point is I wasn't looking for an excuse for why DOA is the way it is, I wanted to know people oppinon on the matter of what others thought that couldn't take doa seriously because of it's explicit content. Main things I didn't agree with that was posted is comparing doa explicit content to other fighters(besides SC), and people pointing out why others think that way. But people make it out like I'm bashing doa which I'm far from it.

Nothing wrong with that.
I just didn't realize your idea of a conversation was:
1. I state an opinion.
2. I ask for others opinions <so far so good>
3. I categorize their comments as making excuses, immature in their responses and insecure.

That's all.
The consensus opinion so far seems to be: yes, the game can be taken seriously, No the service level isn't so far overboard to detract from the game.:)

You're not bashing it, you're being honest with your opinion, but you're not being fair about it.

What's the excuse there?

I don't get what's so unfair about it? I know other fighting games have eye candy. A lot of games do. But comparing games like VF and Tekken eye candy to games like DOA is like comparing SF violence to Mortal Kombat.

We're comparing tits to tits vs people being ripped in half and general fighting combat. See what I mean? Your opinion isn't one grounded in reality.

Not from a perverted perspective, but from an artistic stand point. I wouldn't like it if the boobs didn't bounce. Boobs do bounce in real life. Unless they are silly cones. I'm just as displeased that the bangs don't move, but the rest of the hair does. It's attention to detail..:)

I wasn't really wanting to talk about other fighting games which is my point. I just was talking about DOA since other fighters don't have this problem like doa does. Which is why I pointed all that other stuff out. And what I mean by "problems" I mean being picked on because of its eye candy. A lot of casual people are attracted to DOA because of the eye candy. I just hope this time around more people are actually caring/paying attention to the fighting mechanics.

Absolutely the FGC is more open minded than ever.
I wish we had avatar quotes on here like on Gaf...

No it just that doa goes a bit more over the top compared to other fighters.
It's not that it at all. In fact, a lot of other fighters do TnA better than DOA, it's just that DOA has typically lacked the gameplay depth of other fighters and all it had was the TnA in the eyes of most people.

The difference between the use of fanservice in DOA5 and previous DOA is that the fanservice is optional.

i.e. you have to buy it (the bikinis are DLC).

So yeah, it's changed.

I don't think it's possible to like DOA without tolerating the fact that it's a game with an art style that idealizes the girls. Yet, you can still pretty much enjoy the game at the fullest without seeing any of it.

128 entrants at an offline tourney for a near complete build can't be wrong.

And I feel like I know the OP from somewhere...

It's a first for DOA, sex appeal being optional.

Looking at the gameplay, the art style, the sttempts at character development...

If you ask me, DOA has grown up.

It's gonna take a while before others see that (though that will accelerate post-release), but it's all there.

On a Soul Calibur note, just wanted to mention that alot of fans felt SC4 Ivy (and I think Sophitia as well) went a little too far with the fanservice, and even alot of casuals and series vets complained about it to Project Soul, or at least expressed a desire for a tone-down. Which is why Ivy is somewhat more 'dressed up' now (though her face and voice still scream 'i'm a dude' IMO)

...I feel like Ivy went too far, but Sophitia? Come on, now. The only reason they probably felt that way about Sophie was the character design itself. Do you REMEMBER Cassandra's outfit? lol
