I don't mean to hijack anything, I just wanted to mention that there is a Video Game Study -- Final Fantasy 13 thread. Ashemann21 told me I should post it here (thank you!)
If you haven't already, I hope you can check it out. For the next week or so either I, or my professor will be getting on and checking in to the forums to see if there are any questions or concerns pertaining to the study.
Please post in the Video Game Study Thread, as I don't want to hijack the Final Fantasy thread. It looks like you guys are having a good time making lists. I'm currently fighting the urge to not type my top five male and female characters.

I did the quiz also, is there a reason you only asked questions about the female cast? (I started fangasming about Lightning though on the last question
Anywho on to the reason I started posting xD
I decide to post some Lightning art I found and some of the oh so tasty LightXFang cuz who doesn't ship that amirite?
Let's see. I've played all of the Final Fantasy games and my favorite ones are 6, 8, 10, 13. I didn't like 7 that much, don't really understand the hype about it. Vincent was badass though.
I absolutely adore Lightning, but, the main thing that annoys me about Light is that she got some epic character development in FFXIII but by FFXIII-2 it all got completely negated and she became really stoic again just less of a bitch tsundere like in Chapter 1 of XIII Square completely destroyed her character.
In XIII she learned to stop hiding under the hard outer shell known as Lightning and to accept people as Claire, and she became a much better person and character from it all, she even invited Snow her personal punching bag into her heart and that says something.
But in XIII-2 all of this is reversed and suddenly she's really stoic and isolated again both emotionally and literally, and she gets even worse in LR they gave her character development again by the end but it was a sudden thing as she discovers how to save Serah and not a gradual over time thing like in XIII wich was a million times better and it really gives the impression that Lightning never changes throughout the entire trilogy when Light actually went through the biggest change in XIII's story...

Thank you very much! We appreciate your participation. I woke up today and check on the survey summary page and there have been 20 new participants and I know at least 3 of them are right here; thank you so much!
In terms of this study: we are looking for the impact that female portrayals in video games have on people.
I will try and give you a readers' digest version: in the study conducted by Yao et al., Sexual Priming, Gender Stereotyping, and Likelihood to Sexually Harass: Examining the Cognitive Effects of Playing a Sexually-Explicit Video Game they found that when players (in this case, heterosexual men) played Leisure Suit Larry (a game that encourages the players to see women as sexual objects), they were more likely to sexually harass and have overall negative attitudes towards women. They determined this by lexical and other tasks (not the same as our semantical tasks; their work was much more structured and less organic). It was quite the observation. If you're interested in some of the details I'll give you the highlights in the next paragraph. Otherwise, feel free to jump to the paragraph following the spoiler tag.
They had to go through various scenarios and other activities and their actions/responses were recorded. They would play either Leisure Suit or two control games: pac man and sims 2. They would only play 20 minutes at a time until they would be interrupted for a lexical task, scenario or other activity. For example one of the lexical tasks would be to give the participant a random assortment of letters and give them 30 seconds to create as many words as they could. The ones with Leisure suit would create words like "Slut" "Bimbo" "Whore" etc. The participants with the control games came up with words that were more organic and natural -- that's not the right word but you know what I mean. They would create words like "Blue" "Sign" "Export" etc.
Overall, the participants who played Leisure Suit self-reported a significantly higher likelihood to sexually harass. In addition, they had a significantly lower overall attitude of women compared to the other participants who played one of the other control games which were pac man and the Sims 2. Those who played Leisure Suit also reported a significantly lower attitude of women than when they first began the study. So we know that there is at least short-term, cognitive impacts from playing video games.
This is only what sparked the interest in the present study we are conducting.
With this study in mind, we wanted to analyze a contemporary game and see how the game communicates with its participant.
We're not expecting dramatic results but we want to be able to gauge it. Also, we'll be analyzing the female characters' nonverbals. Their kinesics (body language), proxemics (personal space and proximity to others), and haptics (touch; affectionate vs. aggressive). Questions we will be asking include, but aren't limited to:
Does the game ask its players to challenge female stereotypes we find in previous games? (the incompetent damsel, the mindless sex object, or the infantalized Lolita).
How does Lightning perform leadership? Does she demand to occupy more space in a frame by making her posture larger and does she select to be in the front of the frame in establishing shots, medium shots and wide shots?
How do the characters treat her as a leader? Is she threatened when Snow tries to occupy her personal space? Does she challenge other character's personal space? Do they give up their personal space when she is in frame etc. etc. We'll be asking those kinds of questions when analyzing the content portion of the study.
Sorry, I've posted so much. All in all, we chose this game because we think that this game would be great for discussion considering how much detail go into the characters.
Hope that helps you better understand what we are doing better.

In XIII, Lightning spent her time running away from her problems and lashing out on everyone else for her own faults rather than accepting them and coming to terms with them. The first person in the party that she actually trusts besides Serah in the entire game, is Hope, and in Chapter 7, you see a lot of development with the two of them and how she promises to protect Hope and told him a great deal about herself after their rocky start.
And, I don't think that's exactly the case with her character in XIII-2? In XIII-2 they showed a different side of Lightning, like, immediately after spending all that time trying to rescue Serah and not become a l'Cie, she was wiped off the face of Pulse and thrown into Valhalla and everyone's memory of her got warped except for Serah's. Which probably took a toll on her emotional and mental health, and in her XIII-2 CGI promotional shot (the really pretty one lmfao) her eyes look really glassy like she's tired emotionally and physically.
From the Wikia: In Final Fantasy XIII-2, Lightning has almost become a new woman due to the experiences and emotions she has endured. She has learned to trust others and ask them for help, and expresses her emotions rather than keeping them bottled up inside her. Her time in Valhalla and recognition of her past "sins" has made her more somber.
She's been fighting non-stop since the events of XIII and eventually lost to Caius and she showed a great deal of sadness While she was in Valhalla, she couldn't help Serah on her journey, and she had to learn how to rely on others, and she wasn't really that isolated emotionally? She was still the same Lightning, she was just a lot softer compared to XIII. And in RoTG, after Serah dies, she takes Serah's soul and goes into crystal stasis or 500 years with Serah's soul inside of her.
And right before the start of LR:FFXIII, she cuts those emotions out of her because they 'made her weak' and blamed it on Bhunivelze, along with Serah and it forms Lumina, who is basically a younger Lightning. But idk wtf was going on with the game having her express emotions when she's supposed to be "emotionless"?? Lightning Returns is flawed in literally every way possible lmfao. But she really matured as a person even more after XIII and during XIII-2 and at the end of LR:FFXIII, Lightning is being held down by her own faults, which also shows us a vulnerable side of her before Lumina appears before her and shows her that she needs to accept her 'weaker' emotions in order to truly be at peace with herself and save herself. and then boom the epilogue and she's getting off the train to go see Hope Estheim instead of Serah like ok Light.
I'unno, this is just my take on it, I'm no Lightning enthusiast and I can't really exactly remember the entire trilogy (I care more about Yuna than I do any other FF character lmao) so my opinion may be different than other people's opinions. e3e

TLDR: She opens up to people when she's wearing the pants in a relationship, and wants Serah to do the same. Hope was younger, vulnerable, and quite frankly, is easily whipped. Naturally, Hope is her ideal man.

TLDR: Metaphorically speaking, Lightning chose Grayskull, and became the proverbial She-Ra.

TLDR: @Aerospark's one humble sumbitch. He knows Lightning better than he puts on, capitalizing on everything that was wrong with her as a character in the third game. So much in fact that it makes me want to play the games again. And coming from me (who's been reluctant to play each game more than twice), that's saying a lot.

I'll try my damnest to answer this part:
Lightning Returns basically stated that Lightning put her lesser emotions on the side but haven't COMPLETELY shut them out but it was when Serah was fated to die did Lightning finally completely shut them out, which due to random ass shit, not only did Serah's soul get lost in the shuffle, so did Lightning's lesser emotions, which became Lumina. You say Lightning has matured as a person through XIII and XIII-2, I have to disagree because while she became more trustworthy, she didn't become more outgoing and that could easily only lend to just being friendly with the party as a whole, not to everyone else nor solve the issues with herself.
There IS a novella that has been translated that pretty much told everything else(it's on the GameFaqs forums if you care), but it's the same stuff.
I hope it's the PC version, I think it is. I also hope it's cross-buy since I already have it for the PS3. I also also hope this means they'll be bringing more PS1 games to the PS4. I also also also hope those would be cross-buy too.
If I'm gonna be realistic with myself I'll say there's a 1% chance it'll be cross-buy

Yeah, its the pc remaster which is exactly why I won't bother with it. I already have the better version and I can replace the textures and models and music to make it so much better as well as highten the difficulty

lol the fans reactions in the audience when they announced this was fucking amazing.
"Final Fantasy VII returns on PS4!"
audience goes batshit
"It's the PC port"
audience shuts up
