I needed a little break....and a reconciliatory talk with Chappy.
Divorce papers are still on the table though...
In other news:
There will be a Nier: Automata x Final Fantasy XV collaboration. FFXV's Engine Blade will appear in Nier:
Here in video:
No news about anything of Nier in FFXV yet though...
I wonder if Nier: Automata is a game that I would enjoy. I heard nothing but praise for the first game. And wasn't it set in a fairly big kinda open world even? But it's art style was too grey and depressing for me. What also repelled me back then:
Is this the ugliest dude for a maincharacter in an RPG ever? XD
Ok, I will try my best to explain NieR!
The world of Yoko Taro and Drakengard is made of the following things:
Weirdness, depression, dark humor, and generally, bad gameplay and undesirable graphics with unique art direction.
If you dislike sad games you should stay away from it. NieR (can't talk for Drakengard 1 & 3) is an emotional rollercoaster. The gameplay is a mediocre Zelda clone that mixes various genres with weird results.
The characters tend to all look ugly (imo) and varying degrees of weird, even those not purposefully ugly like Papa Nier himself.
The locations sometimes border on PS2 graphics. Like I am far from being somebody who cares about graphics but NieR made me think "That looks barren".
Bu damn, it's probably the only game that made me feel my PS3 purchase was worth it. I cried fountains multiple times and the New Game+ playthroughs will take your fucking heart, throw it down the window and let it be run over by a million cars. It plays with your knowledges and perceptions, it fools with your JRPG stereotypes, it takes the medium (videogames) and uses it to make it shine.
Also Nier is an ugly old guy... And that made the game very intriguing.
Since JP games always have beautiful young protagonists (same for NieR: Replicant in Japan, which is still the same game over all, kind of like Pokèmon), NieR was so refreshing.
Also I ended up liking him so much I love him regardless of looking like a hippie hobo who saw too many horrible things.
And the game still has weird and interesting designs, it feels unique.
But if I had to say what it reminded me of sometimes...
Shadow Hearts meets Zelda meets Yoko Taro.
Then there is Yoko Taro... He is fucking crazy. But also he is humble, very humble. He is aware his gameplay is bad, and calls his stories bad, even if his work is so passionate and sincerely my favorite type of game (weird emotional/gut wrenching niche games with questionable gameplay).
He writes weird ass stories and deals with heavy and shocking themes.
Just an example of Drakengard's gang: a cannibal, a pedophile, a genocidal guy... There is probably more, it's hard to stomach that game in every aspect.
Drakengard 1 is much more cynical and heartless than Drakengard 3 and NieR.
And NieR is still more normal than Drakengard 3. Drakengard 3 I have yet to play, but from reading around, a good part of the cast is sexual degenerates and there is such an emotional wreckage all around.
Now with NieR 2 it's probable that the gameplay and the graphics will be better thanks to Platinum, but remember... it will be depressing. It will be emotional.
Like people are already sure it's going to be soul crushingly sad and brutal by just looking at the little details.
Thats only thewestern release MC lol the Japanese version had a bishounen hero
Apparently whoever made that thinks westerners only like big biff gruff manly men as MCs
It was Square of America who asked Cavia to have a different hero for the western market. Aside from that and minimal things the game is the same.
It was thought with Young Nier in mind but most Westerners DO feel more emotive towards the Father and Daughter dynamic rather than the Brother and Sister one.
Both versions are good and have their ups and downs.
Brother Nier got more development on side material but I doubt Yoko Taro hates Father Nier.
