How do you play on controller? Pad, Analog Stick, or both?

I'm always trying to up my game when it comes to fighters and such, so I've been wondering lately:

Should I be dedicating my thumb either the stick or the pad, or is it fine to stay hybrid between the two,
Do you get better QCF and QCB's out of the pad, or out of the stick.
Has switching between the two ever screwed you over in a match because of the (small i know) distance between the two?

I stick with pad. Feels more accurate but sometimes the pad doesnt register how you want it to. Like hitting the corner ones twice is somewhat difficult sometimes. But you should of probably added a poll. Would of been easier to see everyones answers. And for the QCF etc, i still use pad and have no problem with it. Its just those corner parts of the pad.

Good Point. A poll would've been a good idea...

Pad. The 360 d-pad doesn't cut it for me by default so I sand the inside ring down to a preferable level.

I am interested in picking up an arcade stick tho. I had the Hori DOA stick way back when but ended up disliking it. Maybe cuz of the ball top or because I didnt adjust to it. I must say tho during the San Mateo tourney I opted out of using the ps3 pad and instead used the MadCatz Sf X TK stick the entire tourney and during casuals. The stick took some adjusting too but it grew on me that day. Only beef I have with it is I need to do my movements right. For spacing purposes and such. That means back dashing on will and running towards the opponent to rush em down on will. That was a frequent problem for me during the tourney so it leaves me wondering: Would a bat top stick stick as opposed to the Japanese ball top work better for me? A theory I want to put to test. Granted, I wasnt going to be fully comfortable using the stick after only a few hours of using it. This is also saying I may jump ship to become a stick player (dat real arcade feel son) instead of using the paddle.

Funny you should mention arcade sticks because I've recently been inspired to learn how to build custom sticks.

I use the 360 d-pad for everything except HCF, HCB, and Full Circles, I use the analog stick for those motions. I can't really say I've tried to learn the analog stick to play DOA. I almost did once, because I got tired of my controller randomly moving. I CANNOT stand that controllers randomly move. I've literally watched my controller move my character without touching it. The controller I have now does it every once in a while, it'll do the :3::3: motion, which messes me up sometimes. If anyone has been in the DOA4 online lobbies, you know how the avatars can do little emotions? It ends up doing the musical emotion, which leads me to believe it might be the right analog that's the culprit(emotions are done with the right stick). I think about half or more of the controllers I've ever gotten eventually did something on it's own mainly moving. I had one controller that got so messed up that my character actually did P+K attacks without touching it.

Ok, sorry about my rant LOL

I usually stick to the pad, but every now and then, I'll shift to the thumb stick for particular moves and combos, mainly the ones using QCB/F. I've never actually played a console fighter using an arcade stick before, but I'm tempted to try. Or at least I would be if I had the cash to fork out for one.

Stick .. no question...

Pads don't agree with me.. At all.

I dont think its impossible to play pad.. If wolfkrone can be a world class C.Viper player on SF4 on pad then anything is possible.

But I feel I am in alot more control on stick for one. and I also have a lot less wrong inputs.
Biggest example would be 46 motions or 64 motions .. I keep getting 236 or 214 by accident and it screws me over ...
I also cant advanced hold on pad with Lei fang .. really frustrating.

I think it is better to get used to / keep using stick.
There are Virtua Fighters, IMO stick is better for VF, esp Akira.
I also broke my 360 and 3DS controller thumb stick because of playing DOA4, DOAD.
So I personally highly recommend using a stick.
The thumb stick or d-pad also hurt my skin. Back then I need to wear a bandage on my thumb.
Doing Hayate DOA4 ranjin move on a controller is a pain.

Originally always pad, had to buy an aftermarket controller for DOA4 'cause 360 pad, blah, blah...
Tried stick and wasn't a big fan until I started playing VF with it. Made a world of difference there. I actually find it almost unplayable on pad now.
The fact that DOA5 has VF characters in it is making me think that stick may be the way to go for me with this one.
I spent a ridiculous amount of time looking for a stick yesterday, so I think I'm ordering a HRAP V3 SA today. I'd also like to get a bat to replace the ball and eventually some custom art. <comments and advice welcome!>
I'm not committing to anything till I've had some time with the game though. :)

I tend to use the directional-pad for most inputs, however, and "rolls" I tend to switch to the joystick, with only a few exceptions (Hayabusa's handstand throw being an example). Makes moves like the Shoho Izuna an absolute breeze to pull off.

Still can't get the Raijin, though. Screw that move...

I used to play pad, now I play stick, although converting is a bitch. Speaking of custom art, I want to get the art from Final Fight One's cover put on my stick and the colors of the ball top and buttons changed to match it, I can pay shipping costs and whatever you need to change the art. Its a regular SFIV Madcats TE.

Trust me, you do not want to pay for shipping across the Pacific.

I don't pay for shipping across the pacific, I basically pay for shipping to California because that's where Armed Forces Pacific is headquartered and thats what all my mail goes through, being in the military has some perks (but not many.)

lol - more like accidentally set off the proximity sensor. ;) Saw your samples in the fight stick thread and will totally hit you up once I have even a clue of what direction I'd like the design to go in.
I can't even manage to find a black bat top in stock anywhere yet :(

I use the pad, but am considering getting a stick. I see no problem in learning both. I even used my keyboard in KwonHo (don't know if any of you know that game), so if that can work, and I can already play consistently with the D-pad on the X360, I don't see how stick would be impossible or too hard. Everything new needs some getting used to in the beginning. I even notice differences between different stock X360 controllers, so, yeah. It just depends how much effort you're willing to put into learning.
