So, one of the top players there was using a ton of unsafe stuff?

Seems contradictory...

how can it be contradictory ?
i would do it as well ... and it is a valid strategy in these kinds of events .. infact im kinda famous for it in sf4...
when you're in a single elimination tournament with nothing but 2 games to win ...
sometimes thats not enough to read your opponent... so going out of you're way and playing unsafe can pay off ..
and it did ..
it caught me completely off guard to be honest ...
plus my nerves went into play ...
this wouldnt have happened if it was sf4 .. as i am better at keeping my cool at that game (probably because I have better tournament experience and opponent experience in that particular game )

if you notice, that same player changed his gameplan altogether when he went up against messy .. because they know each other and they know how each other think..

in my case we just played 3 casual matches before this and i beat him 2- 1 .. (funny enough with normal health setting) ... then we had to stop for the tournament .. its funny because i was doing better on pad because i was training all night the night before to play on pad because of the setups .. and then when we acctually switched to stick for the big stage .. it felt foreign .. lol (probably because i didnt have a chance to warm up ... )

but like i said before .. i lost fair and square .. there are no excuses ..

and hopefully the next time I'll do better .. nerves, stick and all .. lol

DOA mentality baby.

To be fair, most of these guys have had characters so completely terrible coming out of DOA 2U and DOA 4 that it pretty much doesn't matter to them how unsafe they are. I mean in DOA 4, there are I think a grand total of 4 or 5 safe moves for Bayman, and they all lead into nothing. I won a bunch of tournaments with that asshat.... it's just how you had to play with some characters. Use delays and create false pressure so your unsafe stuff doesn't feel unsafe to your opponent, fish out your opponents response time instead of their hit level preference to guard, etc.

What we're seeing now is the product of a decade of this mentality. Doesn't surprise me at all to see regional "top players" being completely unsafe as hell, especially since the only real punishment was a slap on the wrist compared to getting randomly countered.

That was pretty interesting to watch.

Also, don't feel too bad EMPEROR, it happens to us all. As a person with no offline experience and only attending two online tournaments last year, I used to get nervous all the time. And that's even without an audience lol. If I had people watching I'd probably get tense too. It's funny because normally I feel fine fighting against really good players, but when it's a tournament my nerves get to me.

But anyways, congrats on making it to the semifinals. :)

I really enjoyed watching that... Kudos to those who participated. Though, it was really quick. Wish there were more people playing there.

Finished watching it and saw that Messy won. Bearing out that the top players in DOA have a reasonably consistent record.

If DOA5 continues to evolve the way it is, I feel sorry for those people. They won't be considered top for long.

Because they're going up against people who are super unsafe. ^_^

I don't see this game having a tournament scene in UK. You're pretty much bound to have the same people in grand finals in every tournaments because only those handful of people would spend their time on this.

Could someone convince TN not to release their game around the same time as Tag2 if they don't want to go bankrupt?

On a side-note; Jamal, you asshole, I will not participate in any event run by you any more unless you kiss my ass and offer me your own stick during the next time you organize a "tournament".

He can kiss my ass and my stick too if that makes you happy. I just don't want to be part of a marketing campaign disguised as a tournament.

There were two tag2 machines there though, so it was worth the 10 pounds I paid for the ticket.

I was happy before I knew what either you or Jamal were planning to do to each other's asses/sticks.

Anyway pre-release events are almost always run by people who don't know what the hell they are doing -- Marketing, as you said. Usually it's a good idea just to be there as a good means of giving feedback, though, unless the people running it have absolutely no pull on anything.

I imagine there is more salt to your story, however. Pull up a stool and share with me your tale of woe and betrayal at the hands of "Jamal" and his stick of deception.

Not his fault, he was working with what he was given, which was all pads. It could potentially be fun, but not with 360 pads. Yeah, they did have ps3 setups, but organizers were like "naa, man" because there were only two ps3 setups.
