In the end, it is a peer to peer connection, not a local server that is near you. I don't think it's an issue of net code. I hate to say it, but living in Alaska, you're pretty far away from everyone in the US, including washington state and california. If you're getting laggy games and you're on a fast internet connection, then distance has to be your problem.
