I spent most of the movie blown away that people keep giving Paul W.S. Anderson money to make this shit. Seriously, this was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Terrible acting, the next best thing to no plot and what little was there was actually stolen piecemeal from one of the old RE books I read when I was younger. Nearly every scene I envisioned the director yelling "OK honey, this looks like a good place for a press photo, POSE!" because nearly everything that happened concluded with an Action Pose.

Too much been there, done that and nothing new. Oh, and Wesker is apparently a good guy now who needs other people to help him with things. Right. Can't wait for next week's release to redeem action flicks for me. Dredd is gonna rock.

I think I'm probably the only one who thought this but did anyone else spend portions of the movie (or hell, the trailer) thinking "Man, Kate Beckinsale pulls off the black leather look so much better..."

I didn't spend the movie thinking this, but I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with the statement!!! lol

Also, Paul W.S. Anderson keeps making RE movies because the RE movies keep being profitable. Time will tell how this one turns out. And one more thing ... I'd say you're jumping the gun calling Wesker a "good guy" in this movie. He ...

****SPOILER ALERT****

... was facing a desperate situation with limited resources, and recognized that returning Alice to form was very likely the only viable option left to avoid complete extinction of the human race. It's not like he had a change of heart, and suddenly "cares", he still has his own agenda, but "The Red Queen" is an annoyance that has developed way too much control over Umbrella's resources.

I FULLY expect Wesker to turn on Alice as soon as the threat of The Red Queen takeover is wiped out! He'll probably (HOPEFULLY) kill Leon while he's at it!!

****SPOILER ALERT****

I get the movie justification for why he did it. It's still just not in his character. He never accepted help from people or admitted needing them, though he did coerce and manipulate people to make them do things for him. Just a stretch in the way they presented it. Had he presented himself as behind the big driving force behind everything and then arranged for her to get her power back, I would have been on-board. Presented with that scenario, you pretty much have to see where I'm coming from. It's just more in keeping with his character.

As for how it'll do, there were about a dozen people in the midnight showing I went to. The theater is almost always packed for big releases because it's central to quite a few college campuses and just generally accessible. Not a good sign and usually that tips me off as to how a flick will do. We'll know from the estimates tomorrow and final tallies Monday I guess. I hope it flops hard, personally. I'm more interested to see what he can do with the Monster Hunter property as he has made decent flicks in the past.

Dredd is gonna rock.

As critical as you seem to be about everything, IMO, you're in for a disappointment if you expect Dredd to be "good". To me, it's got "cheesy B- action movie, with a high special fx budget" written ALL over it! "Good" movies tend to come with "good" plots, and I'd be SHOCKED to see a "good" plot from this movie (judging by the trailers)!

Doesn't matter to me, though. I'm guaranteed 99+% to like this movie, since I do away with the "expectation" problem! :)

I see what you're going for ... I just think it's misplaced thinking, considering this franchise is not even trying (anymore) to follow elements in the game storylines at all!

It's not flopping hard, but it's not making any notably big totals either. Currently, it's estimated to pull in ~$22mil for the weekend, and considering it's budget (as listed on boxofficemojo.com) is $65mil, it's going to pull a profit ... especially once international numbers start coming in.

It was screened for the press WAY early, which is out of character for this type of movie, and it got some pretty solid reviews. IGN in particular loved it and while I generally dislike their reviews, the written review actually matched the score they gave it. I'm optimistic and Karl Urban and Lena Headey are both phenomenal actors.

As for RE following the games, this one just screamed try hard with all of the characters they randomly shoe-horned in. Barry especially. He was funny but to people who didn't know the games he was just a filler character created to die. His role in the movie was a bit underwhelming to me as a fan. He was also too skinny haha. I was hoping for like a Zangief-build on the guy.

It was packed, every seat filled up here, in both the English and Japanese language screenings, I was curious as to how popular these were for the Japanese so I walked in the Japanese language one too, wasn't a huge fan of it though. It was alright, but the dialogue was ALL garbage.

***SPOILERS***
Although, the smirk on Wesker's face when she walks in the oval office and is like "looks like you're doing well for yourself," or whatever, was fucking classic.

I enjoyed it for what it was, but I felt like I was waiting for something to happen the entire movie. When something did happen, it was over.

Be sure to post your review/impressions of Dredd when you get the chance. I've just seen it at a midnight showing, and it certainly cleared my moderately-placed bar of expectation. Kinda gave me a "Sci-Fi" Die Hard vibe throughout.

Also of note, after 1 week, RE: Retribution has already pulled in $75+mil at the box office (domestic + international)! That's one more point for Paul W.S. Anderson ... for better or worse!! lol

I'm up VERY early today and didn't get much sleep (though the reason is worth it, haha), but I was a huge fan of Dredd. The movie almost seemed like it took itself too seriously until I realized that was the whole point. The one-liners were great, Urban's portrayal was spot-on, and nothing in the movie felt tacked on or trivial. Very driven narrative, which I appreciated, and the world-building was top-notch.

That actually makes me super excited for dredd, when I saw the line "I am justice!" wasn't shouted in the same stallone way I was a bit worried

I'm sorry all these movie sucks. At least if they're going to put in characters from the games can they at least ACT like them? They never do. The only movie that was "watchable" is the first one. I did see Damnation though and really enjoyed that. Much better than Degeneration.
