What is String manipulation:
The majority of attacks in Doa4 leave you at a disadvantage. The only way to soften the disadvantage is to use string manipulation. String manipulation is the usage of Strings to influence with intent to decieve. In other words, You will use string manipulation to get out of situations where a particular attack will leave you at a punishable disadvantage.
Basic Level String manipulation: -Mixups-
Mixups- Mixups refer to using string enders that range from high, mid and low attacks.
EX: Kasumi

Against a Blocking Opponent
As you can see, the 3rd attack either end at a different hit level, or an attack that needs to be held with a different hold. On a basic level, this can be used to decieve your opponent into holding or blocking on the incorrect hit level.
Against a Stunned Opponent
When stunned, there are times you cannot SE and is forced to hold. Knowing your opponents string option select is very important, almost as important as knowing each characters frame advantage/ disadvantage.
Intermeditate Level String manipulation: -Free canceling-
When your canned strings are being blocked, countered, or held, there is something else that needs to be done.
Free canceling- Free Canceling is used to stop a string in the middle of one and start a new one or add a different ender to the string.
With the same strings that is listed above:

P and emd the canned string, and create a New one: EX:

The amount of string combinations possible is limitless. To keep your opponent guessing, You will need to free cancel at different sections of the strings that you are using.
Disadvantage:
Once your opponent see a pause, that signals a free cancel, inwhich your opponent can use a jab to intterupt your next attack. To avoid this, you will need to use staggerd timing(delays).
