The Art Style and Graphics Discussion

I have no screens yet will probably edit them in later, but I really like how Everyone has gone to the rapture looks.

It's identical to how countryside north England looked like in the late 80s early 90s, reminds me of the small Yorkshire town I grew up in.

Speaking of Everyone has gone to the rapture and first person adventure games...I made some new photos of Ethan Carter, and now be honest, doesn't this look like it's real? :O

I swear, these are no real life photos, but in-game shots! XD

It looks more...uncanny valley-ish to me, if I'm honest. Everything looks like something that is, indeed, real, but not what it's actually supposed to be. The big tree and the rocks on the train track are the most noticeable examples. They don't quite look like an actual tree or rock pile. They look like those fake Styrofoam rocks that you'd see in an aquarium or something. Like, if somebody came up to me and said they'd made those pictures with Styrofoam and paint as an art project of sorts, I'd be like, "Holy hell, you have NO IDEA how sweet this looks." But if they said they were actual photos of locations they'd been, I'd be doubtful.

On August 25. the survival horror game Until Dawn will be released exclusively for the PS4. The game looks very nice and especially the dark setting, with it's lighting and shadowing looks really impressive and atmospheric. The character models and backgrounds don't look too shabby either. Here some screens:

And here's a let's play, to see it in motion:

I plan on getting Until Dawn and yeah the graphics and general atmosphere of the game look really nice. I love how its a classic slasher film but we can choose to save the victims. Also I'm into games with lots of replay value so this game will be great for that.

Well, it's maybe the softness and the lack of contrast in the picture, that gives off that styrofoam vibe. The PS4 not only heavily compresses images, but she also runs a softening filter over them, when taking photos. (I'm actually kinda mad, that the quality is still so shitty, whereas the relatively new photo feature on the Xbone takes so great pictures! D: ) In the game everything looks much sharper and better. I tried to edit the railroad track picture with additional sharpness and contrast.

Looks much more real now, doesn't it? :)

2nd and 4th look real, others look off due to lighting and/or basic structure and texturing.

Pretty much. Like the moss covered rock? Moss doesn't reflect light that way. The tree looks hollow and plastic. etc etc.

Still very impressive though.

I'm sorry but the faces, at least that lady's, look terrible. And I can't figure out what they meant the blood texture to be.it looks less like blood...not even a bruise, but more one of those really unfortunate skin conditions.

One of those "looks good at a distance" games.

Eh? They still all look like plastic props. Mighty impressive plastic props though.

Its the spec maps mostly. Rock and wood don't reflect light that way.

The facial animations also look really off. To a point, where it is really distracting and uncomfortable. XD

Pretty much this. It's not the level of detail that's giving that impression, it's that the details themselves just don't quite look real. It looks great, don't get me wrong, but it looks more like incredibly detailed props than actual rocks and such. Like I said, it looks real, in a sense that I could reasonably be fooled into thinking they're photos. Just photos of incredibly well-made props, rather than actual scenery.

If you want realistic looking games MGSV and P.T. Have you covered.
It's not about realistic, it's about being inherently consistent. Until Dawn attempts to be so realistic in it's graphic style and it manages to be in many ways...but one of the most important things, characters facial expressions, fell completely flat. :/
There are games, that have a very stylized look, which I find just as beautiful as realistic looking games. Wind Waker for example, or Tales of Symphonia and Tales of Vesperia. I love this game's art style as well. Rime:

With facial expressions, the best game I think I've ever seen with them is LA Noire. They're pretty important with the gameplay detecting subtle differences to tell if someone's telling the truth.

Then here's a full uninterrupted interrogation

I think, they look scary, somehow blurry and flat as pancakes... One can clearly see, that they are only projecting a real face on a blank canvas. A weird method by the way...but inventive, I give them that.

The only spot that looked that way to me was Lorna's eyes. Look at the shadows of the face as it moves and how the lighting shines on them showing it's not just flat.

I never understand what people mean when they say a character has dead eyes. for example I thought the characters in until dawn looked fine but people say they have dead eyes. I'm wondering what makes a character have dead eyes. Are they flat, not reflective, or subtle things like they don't have the slight movements that real humans have?

What they probably mean is that their eyes don't really react or show emotion. Like look at Lili's t6 eyes vs. her TTT2 eyes, In tekken 6 they were pretty much dead and did little to reflect her emotions.

I love Lili and will always be her biggest fanboy, but her eyes were very dead and lifeless back then...

Interesting question... I think, it's a combination of several problems leading to "dead eyes". Small pupils and lot's of visible white do make eyes look glaring, cold and unemotional, like in the Lili example above. Did you know, that in pictures models' pupils are often photoshopped larger, so they look more attractive and approachable to the viewer?
Another very important thing is blinking. A fair amount of blinking appears to be human, it's also something that we perceive as attractive. In the scene of the Until Dawn video, that I was referring to, the character hardly ever blinks. He's just creepily staring at us. Only dead things don't blink!
Then there's also lots of muscle movement and twitching going on around our eyes and in our eyes. Did you notice, that eyes/irises never really stand perfectly still? Dead or Alive 5 does this very well. Go zoom in on a character during a victory pose and watch how vivid the eyes actually are. It's also something, that we see a lot in anime. The flickering lights in the eyes, especially if a character gets emotional, are supposed to bring movement into the eye.
Speaking of flickering lights: Reflective lights also bring a lot of life to eyes. They add a focal point and bring movement as well as the simulation of wetness from tears to the eyes. Which, again, we perceive as natural and human. When I do character illustrations, placing highlights/shine in the eyes is always an important, if not the most important, step in the entire face. Here's a recent illustration of mine with and without the highlights:

It's such a small thing, but the difference is huge!

I love how you can see the tiny things like Leifang looking just a tiny bit down and stuff. Also the Leifang looks cute in this game so it's sad if she is compared to a lizard.
