The Art Style and Graphics Discussion

Hm, well I can't argue with that. I just prefer Tekken's hair in general, aside from Kasumi's ponytail and MR's long pigtails, DOA hair imo just isn't very good looking in my opinion, too thin, floaty, and clips too much, making me think it looks half finished. Tekken doesn't have perfect hair either, but i just prefer it over DOA's, something about it just looks more solid. In that Nina pic, the ugly blocky side braid, the hair line, and the not so detailed top base are really the only things off about it to me.
The Honoka pic has better movement and placement hair wise, but it just doesn't look solid imo, but then again DOA and loose hair don't really mix. You can zoom in on DOA hair and see how kind of fuzzy the loose tresses are, even Hitomi's bangs are very fuzzy when viewed close up. ~_~ And hair has some transparency, but DOA overdoes it, I literally regret whenever I choose loose hair Kasumi. Not argue or anything, this is just my personal view on it, I myself am a bit picky with smaller details like hair and stuff. XD

It's a bit awkward to take pictures of things in motion because you can't move the camera while the game is paused, but not impossible. Any characters in particular you want to see?

Actually the characters don't reallymatter. Maybe a couple females and a couple of males? Don't worry if the shots aren't artsy, lol, if you can only take them in motion. ;) It's just the character models that are interesting. Thanks very much! :)

Oh, those bull-shots...
Well, first of all your Mila in-game shot is from DOA5 vanilla on PS3/Xbox360 in 720p. A better/fairer comparison would be a screen form DOA5Last Round on PS4/Xbone in 1080p with improved lighting and IQ. Other than that, of course the bullshot looks better. XD It's made on PC. Very likely in 4k resolution then downsampled and then enhanced with Photoshop magic. Many of the DOA bullshots are not exactly subtly retouched.
You won't find a Tekken 7 screenshot of that image quality either though. Nor many other games actually. Maybe with the next console generation and on very highend gaming PCs?

Lol, what stuff? I studied Graphic and Design and I am also pretty interested in the technical aspect of game graphics, so I picked up a few things over the years. There's a lot I do still not know though. But I'm keen to learn more. (And after all I plan to work in game design in the future.) For example just recently I talked with some guys who know their stuff about game hair. ;)

That's neat! That's actually coincidental, I myself plan on going to an art college after I graduate, I wish to make my own fighting game one day, if only it could happen. XD

So, in the process of getting pictures for @Tyaren, I noticed that a lot of the characters have a lot of small details that are...really, almost impossible to see normally. To give a few examples...

Ky's shoes and gloves say "The United Kingdoms of Illyria -- ILLYRICUM" He also has "Love truce, Correct errors" on his cape, and "Nothing can be done without hope" on his chest.

Slayer has a name and a date on the back of his suit, and "Dandyism" on his shoes.

Millia has "All cats are gray in the dark" on two of her belts, and "IVY TRADITIONAL -- Lady Ivy from Ivy Traditional" on their buckles.

Sol has "Fight fire with fire" written in various places on his outfit.

Elphelt has a nice rear. I don't intend to share that one.

Since I don't want to hinder people's phones or computers loading this thread, and the pictures are rather large (3718 x 2092), I'm only gonna put one here, the rest you can find here. Jpgs, unfortunately, because imgur, but I can send anyone who wants it a zip or something with the png versions.

@Juihau, these are perfect! :D Thanks so much for taking your time. The modelling is really great, though I can only imagine how amazing they would look like if they weren't made for a cross-gen game. Double or triple the polygons would sure look even better.
They really nailed the anime look and that from all sides and perspectives. Anyone who tried to model anime/comic style characters in 3D once knows how very difficult, almost impossible even, it is to get them look the exact same as in 2D. Right @Blash? ;)

I'd really love to download them as png files. :)

In any case, are the cough14 artists and modelers on suicide watch yet? This is just devastating, man. Maybe next time SNK should just outsource their shit to TN instead of some chinese ricing sweatshop

a little racist and very disrespectful. the developers purposely chose to KOF14 to be 3D so they can improve for later games.

I feel sorry for them considering the fact that Mai looks a lot better in doa5, I do think the graphics for KOF14 have improved quite a good bit while its been in development so It's clear they are trying.

The initial 2D designs look quite good (especially the scrapped ones XD)...the new team just really isn't very versed in bringing these 2D designs to life in 3D, which is a shame.

Little comparison of KOFXIV Mai and DOA5 Mai:

I only wished they'd give DOA5 Mai's costume a few more details. Looks a bit bland in the quite realistic DOA5 style. KOFXIV Mai has more clothing details, like her pretty obi (the belt).

I love Mai's ponytail in DOA, and her as a whole honestly. It's almost like she was meant to be rendered in DOA from the start.

Hopefully the people who make KOF14 can get better as they get more experience in modeling in 3D.

I know! X) She looks so insanely good in doa5 I love how she looks, I'm excited to see gameplay from her and what other outfits she has since I do t know the other outfits she has. I hope she gets dlc outfits as well since they could just give her other ones from her KOF games outfits.

In really early DOA1 versions Kasumi was basically Mai's twin lol from the red ninja dress to the brunette ponytail.

Its obvious now why they changed it, but yeah, Mai is the reason Kasumi even exists.

For an open world game The Witcher 3 is a very pretty game, even on console. Great character models, even NPCs, great texture and shading work, beautiful lighting, very lush and detailed landscapes, impressive LOD (level of detail in the far distance) and all of that with a very clean image quality. After a number of patches it also runs with a pretty solid framerate. ;)

Some pics of the beautiful character models:

Funny to think how hesitant I was about getting this game in the first place. Took some time getting into, but now it's like one of my favorite games ever. So diverse and intriguing.

They really should do a console port/remaster of the first two games to give console players a chance to experience the origin of geralt and his story. W3 is an amazing experience on its own but being there from the start makes you appreciate it far more when seeing the evolution of geralt and the many characters he encounters from W1 to W2 to W3.

I mean going from this doofus

Though a remake would be interesting I think I'd have a problem playing with a different Geralt than this
image.jpg

I also hear that the gameplay is quite hard and old fashioned? But if they spruced it up a bit I'd jump right in the saddle, which brings us to

Must have been the funniest mission ever :)

You sure are in love with your Grandmaster Cat School Armor. XD

Same with me and the Mastercrafted Wolven Armor:

And basic Cat School Armor:

In general the armors are so beautifully designed and crafted in this game. Just look at that detail and how realistic the textures and shaders look and react to light:

Though I do like it very much, it is a little bit of a coincidence most of the pictures are wearing that. I both got it and took all these pictures yesterday.

I am still missing the griffin and ursine armours. So far I would say my favorite Witcher outfits are Wolf, Viper, Cat and Manticore.

But yes, the armours and swords are beautiful in this game.
