So I've always wondered what people listen to when they're playing their matches at tournaments, and I can't be the only one, so I thought of making a general thread where everyone can share.
Music can be a really helpful tool for one's momentum, to calm your nerves for more focus or to add anxiety to keep your inhibitions at bay. It can also aid in visualizing your success and put the victory in your hands. Maybe you don't use music at all and are wondering if it could do something to help you. Let's talk about it!
What could you share? Try these:
- What music provides for you in a competitive environment
- What genres, songs, and artists are best suited for what you're trying to accomplish
- What kind of headphones do you use, why that model
- Share some favorite songs! You never know, what you're listening to could be a new gem for someone else!
I'd love to see a bit of what everyone listens to, very exciting!
I'll start, I guess. First, I can't use anything other than my Sony MDR-V6's. I love the accuracy they have with bass, keeping it perfectly in line with the rest of what's going on without distorting. It's hard to imagine I could enjoy any pair of cans more for the price.
I tend to overthink things in competitive games and it's especially overwhelming when I can really hear my thoughts, so I rely on music to keep my mind blank, something with enough varying punctuation that I can dedicate a plan to the rhythm on the fly as a kind of reassurance/encouragement for the moment. And then when it works, the beat encourages me to keep with the same. It's much easier to keep weaknesses in mind that way and visualize the hits if I'm sticking to the beat. It also helps to stay on my game plan instead of my opponent's.
I also need a certain kind of intensity to keep my heart pumping and my mind reeling so my reflexes stay sharp. A lot can be mentally dropped between matches so I have to find a mindset that keeps me on the same page for when the next match begins.
For inspiring rhythms, I tend to stick to rock, jazz, percussian-oriented music. Sometimes chill-out will do the trick but tends to work better for FPS's and similarly paced stuff. For fighters, it needs to be quick and technical. Hitting buttons is rhythmic in of itself so whatever can enhance and punctuate my own natural rhythm is what I'm looking for.
I used to rely on bands like Cave-In, Stone Temple Pilots, or Filter to give me what I need but I moved on to music with more repetition like prog rock, metal, and a shit-ton of soundtracks and OCR albums. So if I was listening to music for the win, it'd sound like this:
Cannot wait for this game to come out...
I just realized 4 of 5 of those came from games. Not as varied as I wanted but oh well... So what about you guys?
