Like, where to start? I know there are quite a few beginner tutorials, but most of them are about technics, in depth strategys and stuff.

So far I main Mila and Eliot, my plan for now is to get better with Mila as I really like her MMA fighting style (and as a side note Im interested to learn it myself). I did her command training several times by now and know most of her moves through that. I doubt its a good idea to only do practice, so what would be the next step? Play against lv >5 computer over and over until I feel that im good enouh to tackle online? Doing combo challenges? So far even lv4 AI is a bit challenging for me, so im still a bloody newbie.

I also have DoA 5+ on Vita, I know there are a few missing moves and the balancing is a bit different, but does it matter for the overall training or would it teach me bad habits due to the missing stuff and the different balancing?

playing vs the computer is only really good for practicing combos on an opponent that fights back.

best thing for you would probably be to watch people who know how to use the character already. not to necessarily try to imitate them, but to understand what they're doing and see how they've put the moves to use. i feel like step 2 to learning any character is understanding the properties of the moves you've just learned. what crushes, what launches, whats the best enders for a combo etc..

well something that i learned is 1: watch the best, christie is my main character so i'm aways watching xcalibur bladez videos
2: learn holds and throws, i was terrible with holds because of the timing , but hey i training and training again and now it's natural to use this.
3: combo challenge , i hate this one buuuut helps you a lot about learn of the timing and the moves of you characters it's good for you create new combos too when you learn and mix them, well i hope this help you too . Sayonara.

Generally, look for those players who use "your" character(s) really well. Ask them to teach you or play you, the worst they can do is say "no" but you'd be surprised at how many say "yes" & are sincere about it. What do they do that you can incorporate into your repertoire? Case in point, I'm always on lookout for Christy users & adore seeing their matches, just to see if I can at least do a variation on what they did. Take a page from what boxers do also, record your matches, your more memorable wins & particularly losses. For the losses, wait about a day or 2 after you've calmed down. Look at them from a second party perspective. Study them as they do, while it's generally not advisable to play the "what if" game, there are exceptions since there are simply times where you can do nothing but play that "what if" game (I don't happen to have a time machine, do you?). Those are among those times. Look for those things you did that the opponent capitalized on; what could you have done different where they wouldn't have? If you have a mirror match, record those, study them after.

If you play strictly online (as I do) keep in mind that it's a tad different then an offline match. There are things that I can do online that wouldn't wash in offline matches (when I use to do them) & vice versa. You'll find that out yourself soon enough if you haven't already.

These last are "toughees" since I still fall into those traps, though less then I once did.
  • Be careful of mashing, some characters are easier to mash with then others. I should know, I happen to main one.
  • I'll paraphrase a line from "The outlaw Josey Wales" here; "When it looks bad & it looks like you're going to lose, keep your head. Because when you lose that, you neither regain the initiative or win, that's just the way it is."

There is no best way to improve for beginners, only a variety of options that best suit the needs of the individual.

Whether it's understanding a technical term to understand why moves behave certain ways, or even learning how a player uses a certain character, everything is important for beginners to learn. TBH, I'd take pride in being a beginner, 'cause then you'd have an unlimited desire to never stop learning.
