Yea.... well I'm working on it.

I'm at the point now where I'm starting to actually understand whats going on thats causing me to lose. The realization that every character in the game has attacks with invincible frames on wakeup inparticular pisses me off greatly. Shit annoyed me to no end in street fighter when it was just the dumbass shotos using it, but I could "deal" with it because it was just the shotos. I don't like every character forcing a 50/50 on me when i should be at the advantage.

So I'll spend the next week bitching to myself every game about it until I get over it or quit. If I stick it out I'll have a sudden moment of realization and become godly within a month or two.

I've pretty much got the whole "breaking down a new fighting game" thing down to a science at this point, behavioral patterns and all. Looking at my calender, I'll probably throw my chair at the wall sometime mid-september. I should probably start looking at cheap replacements.

I'm actually interested in trying this game, but I know no one else who is. I don't think I want to put down 60 smackers on a game I might just suck too much at to enjoy playing with randoms.

I've never played, or even heard of the Persona RPGs before, so I have no attachment to the universe. I've never played anything from Arc System Works before either, but BlazBlue always looked very complicated to me. I also don't like it when games have anime art styles, but for some reason this game just looks cool. Maybe I'll get it if it goes on sale. I don't know.

The DLC sounds stupid as hell though.

I don't know your preferences, but the Persona RPG's are actually pretty amazing. If you're not willing to shell out a bunch of hours in gameplay, you could also check out the Persona 4 anime to catch up on the story for the game. The other thing I'll address before getting to P4A, Blazblue is actually incredibly shallow compared to Arc System Works other game, Guilty Gear.

Persona 4 Arena is an incredibly deep game, with mechanics that not only appeal to casual players but also to the competitive scene as well. In fact, this game is probably one of the best I've seen at appealing to both crowds. If you're not as technical or execution heavy as some players, the game's execution isn't so strict as to turn you away, for the most part, including every character having the beginner combo of pressing "A" 5-6 times to execute your most basic combo, and depending on how much bar you have, will end with your super attack. The game doesn't only cater to the casual player though. These casual combos do less damage than a full blown normal combo, but even these aren't execution heavy, for the moderate player. Finally, in execution terms, other tactics, such as the double jump, the all out attack, the cross ups, short hops, super jumps, the evasive motion, and the one more time mechanics are all included, and a bit more strict in the execution department, as to appeal to the hardcore crowd.

Each character is controlled by four buttons, light attack, heavy attack, light Persona, and heavy Persona. This leads to every character having both enough attacks to keep the game spicy all the times, but also few enough attacks for it to not take to long to memorize every characters move list, and this plays into my next point, the roster. There aren't many characters in P4A when compared to other games, such as Street Fighter or King of Fighters, but the few there are, are all incredibly diverse and play completely different from each other, including characters such as Yu, who reminds me of Ky Kiske from Guilty Gear, Kanji, a grappler, and Chie, who feels similar to playing Sakura mixed with Jam Kuradoberi. Now I feel ya when it comes to anime fighters. I normally make fun of them pretty hardcore, calling them Hentai Fighters, and honestly, at tournaments, I don't even like going into the anime fighter room because I'm not a big fan of the crowd, but I can't get into how positive I am about this game, it is extremely well done, and in my opinion, should be given a shot by anyone who considers themselves a fighting game player.

Nearly every fighting game in existence is an anime fighter.

Doesn't have to be 2d or cell shaded to achieve that stature, it just has to be Japanese as fuck and use all of the stereotypes. And pretty much all fighters do that, including Tekken.

And I wouldn't go too far into insulting people who are into Hentai -- There is a pretty strong argument to be said for a fantasy being a hell of a lot better than the real thing in many cases. Hate to say it but basement dwellers with girl shaped pillows tend to be a lot more functional and happy in life than the typical redneck with an abusive wife and twelve wallet-draining offspring. Food for thought.

Not from me, man. I actually have the patience to read, lol. I appreciate the input, thanks.

If I were to want to catch up on the story, I would have to watch the anime. I don't own a PS2/PS3 to play the Persona games, nor do I own a Vita to play that "Golden" port.

I might try P4A out at some point. Still not sure for now.

Yeah, I don't really have a problem with hentai, or those who like it. I just generally don't like it when video games use that art style. Not really sure why, I just don't.

And I suppose you're right about all fighters being "Japanese as fuck". Even the older DOA games looked anime-ish, despite being in 3D.

Welp...I bought all but sleeping dogs (heard it's glitchy as hell)

My poor wallet but man I'll get have an amazing rest of the month until tekken tag 2.

The nice thing about offline communities is that you can play games without having to buy it as long as ONE person in the local group buys it.

So... do you know anyone locally who might have a copy of DOA5 for you to play? Anyone? Hmmmmmmm...

Most air-dashers give the defending player a shit ton of ways to escape (rolls, quick get up, etc.). Some will allow OTG hits that make putting someone on the ground part of a combo, but it's not the same kind of knockdown pressure you find in say, SFII or SSFIV.

That said, the R-Actions vary greatly per character (i.e. Mitsuru's is super godlike, while Elizabeth's is beaten by a simple neutral jump) that it's simply a matter of finding matchup specific counters. Even against the DP like ones, it's sometimes simply a matter of finding a good angle in mid air to beat them out.

Which is why some of us prefer the term "air-dasher."

Well, a good number of players coming into this are actually not from the "anime" crowd. You actually got Marvel players like OMG-Itz-Andre (who is also planning to play DOA5) and ChrisG picking the game up and guys like Watson and Valle running events for it.
