Xbox-One Revealed

If sony pulls this same shit...and the fact that they are not coming out and saying definitively that they aren't.

I get the feeling that xbox 360 and PS3 are going to have 15 year life cycles. If casual.gamers find out that used games are only viable on current gen....it's over.

We'll go back outside :D

But that's just short-term. Servers going out is one of the long-term effects.
Agreed

What it boils down to is that you don't actually own the game - you're renting it for 20 or so years.

And what if Microsoft goes under? Will my thousand dollar library of games cease to exist?

Ryan McCaffrey at ign compared this to the ethernet port on the original xbox...that's stupid, I didn't have to get online to enjoy single player games.

There's no defense for this - riding with the 360 till they cut the servers.

Did he actually do that?
Yeah.

He was using it as an example of how Microsoft isn't afraid to pioneer new technology. But not being able to play online games and not being able to play them period are magnitudes different from.each.other.

But back in 2001 no one was calling ethernet only a deal breaker because online console gaming wasn't a huge subset of the industry and people mostly viewed it as a LAN port so it was just an extra. Also, by the time Xbox Live became desirable it was 2 years later and by 2003 broadband was gaining traction.

It's too bad that the people who are supposed to protect consumers ( the critics) are largely on the side of the companies - the only people who seem to be shooting straight on the situation are Kotaku, Forbes, Time, You and We (the customers)

Really weak, if this is true.

The latest and greatest in MS fucking themselves over; the sad part is, I enjoyed the Halo series, but I probably won't be able to anymore because of the xboxone it self and the way MS is handling the online DRM, and used game crap.

I stopped liking Halo after Halo 2. The first two were great, then the series went to shit.

With E3 2013 right around the corner, we've been hit with a slew of confirmed rumors via Microsoft PR.
Based on what has already been confirmed, I believe I've already come to my decision.
I'm interested to see what others think on the matter.
Here's a great round up from IGN on what has been confirmed thus far pre E3.
(Doubt we'll get much more revealed about the console itself and its functions. Microsoft cancelled the round-table with execs at E3.)
http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/05/22/xbox-one-what-we-do-and-dont-know

To summarize:

  • Xbox One requires internet connection. (for licensing reasons)
  • Not always online, yet highly dependent on constant internet access. (For games, access required once every 24 hours on home console and once every hour on a friend's console)
  • No game sharing, only "giving". (transfer of game license, allowed only once. this means you would no longer have/own the game)
  • Bound-to-obliterate-pre-owned-gaming policy. Check. (details still sketchy)
  • Mandatory game installation. (after which the disc is no longer needed)
  • Kinect peripheral is required for console to function.
  • Kinect can only be paused, not turned off.
    • Microphone is always on.
  • Main new console features (TV bullshit) only available in the US at launch.
  • No backwards compatibility. Digital or Disc.
  • Xbox LIVE Gold membership will transfer as well as gamerscore.
  • Xbox LIVE Arcade games do not transfer. They stay with your X360. Entertainment purchases however WILL transfer.
  • Xbox LIVE Gold membership still incurs a monthly/yearly fee.
I think any sane gamer after reading these drastically different, and quite restrictive features will turn away in utter disgust from the Xbox One.
I have. Only to look back in anxiety, awaiting what they attempt to offer at E3. I am strongly bent toward not purchasing an Xbox One at the moment. So much so, that I say "no" when asked if I'll be buying it.

I bought the 360 in early 2012 and I am sill enjoying it very much.

One or two years after the new ones get launched I might purchase one.

I do think the X360 does have a little while longer. They extended Xbox LIVE support for Xbox Original for about 4 years after X360 launched.

Edit:

There will need to be massive incentives for me to get a Xbox One, even later. Like it being free.

Even if Microsoft does show us some pretty good games at E3, its anti-consumer policies are still unacceptable.

A definite no-buy unless things change. But it doesn't mean I'll get a PS4 either since the launch titles don't interest me (I'll wait for the Slim to come out).

Completely agree.

I would love to hear what a consumer from the new demographic of Microsoft's new Xbox has to say. What is the non-hardcore gamer saying about it?

PS4? Yes.
X1? **** NO!

What I may also do is actually go about applying a case/fan mod to my X360, giving it a fresh new look. I've been itching to do that for a while now. So long as I can still scour the interwebs for cool-looking parts.
