Dead or Alive 5: Director wants more cameos, ‘Ryo from Shenmue would be ideal’

Dead or Alive 5 director Yosuke Hayashi would like more cameos in Dead or Alive 5 after launch, and revealed to VG247 that his ideal cameo would be Ryo from Shenmue. He also explained the relationship between Team Ninja and Sega in greater detail.
Hayashi said, “Actually not a lot of people may know this but the first Dead or Alive game that came out in arcades was actually made with the Virtua Fighter arcade engine. So that’s how the first ever Dead or Alive project came about.”
“We didn’t aim to be where Virtua Fighter was, but because we used its engine as our base, we obviously had some kind of connection with Sega. So when we decided to make Dead or Alive 5 we went to see them and to say, ‘Hey, we’re making this game’, and through conversation we asked if Sega could join us in this celebration of our comeback.
“Sega then said OK, and thanks to our connections in the past they thought it’d be fun, so why not do it? So we got the characters and Sega was very cooperatively actually, in letting us adjust them for our game. We were in very close contact with their development team.”
“We got their guidance and feedback, we got them to check for everything we were doing with the characters. Because of that kind of close communication, we managed to pull off a fairly close system to the original Virtua Fighter characters.”
When we asked if there were other dream cameos Hayashi would like to see in the game, he replied, “Speaking of Sega characters, I’d say the main character from Shenmue. When considering a cameo for a fighting game, you have to look at someone who can actually fight. After the release of Dead or Alive 5 we’d like to explore cameos further, but at the moment…it’s a secret”

I would kill to have Ryo from shenmue to be playable in DoA5. Shenmue is easily my favorite game of all time (ironically I'm actually replaying shenmue right now. Finished shenmue 1 a few days ago and I'm on disc 2 of shenmue 2 lol.) I doubt Sega/AM2 would allow it though as they love ignoring shenmue and are afraid of giving any kind of light to shenmue fans.

Wow, that would be amazing. =] I loved Shenmue. If TN is looking into cameo DLC, I wonder if there'll be costume DLC...I'd definitely enjoy more than six costumes (15+ please! I'll buy all of 'em).

Also, if they're looking into character DLC, maybe a future Leon update isn't such a far cry away. Several people *coughEmperorCow* seem to be hurting. ^^" If they do him up right -- pimp out his moveset like the others, didn't skimp on his character model -- I wouldn't even mind if he didn't have a place in the story. As long as he mixed in well with the others, and didn't looked tacked on.

Didn't they actively deny this in the past? Pretty sure Itagaki himself denied it in interviews.

Psh, at best, Ryo Hazuki will be a DLC skin for Akira. I'd bank my copy of Virtua Fighter Animation for Game Gear on that shit.

Why waste it on Ryo who is the same style as akira when You can have Leon or Ein guest in DOA5. AT least they aren't the exact movelist from existing characters in the game.

No "Unfair DLC" characters (Paid). So if any character is being added it will be free. Now Stages and Costumes I guess that will be another story.

It's a mistranslation.... after DOA5 means DOA6. But cameos are pretty lame any way you look at it. They're driven by nothing but greed. I'd rather see a new character that has some meaning in the greater picture

That's actually just the Japanese pronunciation of the kanji 八極拳. "Bajiquan" is the Chinese reading. For example, Leifang's tai chi is pronounced "tai chi chuan" in Chinese and "taikyokuken" in Japanese. *pushes glasses up nose*

seems that if there were to be any more cameos it would be from Sega .. particularly AM2... so shenmue and VF .... all the characters are well established and have amazing move sets ... oh man ... the possibilities !!

Honestly just give us a full blown DOA vs VF next year ! that would be my dream come true.

As for Leon... ... I really hope he gets some love as well... I mean, Isn't it bad enough that Roland Died ? let the guy let off some steam and smash some little girl faces in. He needs it... for therapy.. HAVE SOME SYMPATHY TEAM NINJA!!
