News Monty Oum has passed away

Today, we are very sad to report that Monty Oum, legendary creator behind the Dead Fantasy series, has passed away at the young age of 33 years old, according to his recent employer Rooster Teeth.

Over the last several years, Monty has worked on and delivered some action-packed fighting series videos, pitting the cast of Dead or Alive against the cast of the Final Fantasy series, which became an instant hit to many fans as Dead Fantasy.

Dead Fantasy (Part 5)

Monty later on went to lend his much talented skills to Rooster Teeth, popular devs behind the Red vs. Blue Halo series.

According to Rooster Teeth, Monty suffered a severe allergic reaction from a recent surgery procedure, was checked into a coma but, unfortunately, he never came out of it and passed away.

From everyone here at FreeStepDodge and all surrounding DOA fans around the world, we would truly like to send our most deepest condolences to his family members. He will be greatly missed.

As someone who appreciates his work and have watch each of the Dead Fantasy videos about 10-15 times since they have been released this is heartbreaking news. His stellar work will be missed.

Many people forget that Monty was also a developer who worked at Midway as a combat designer, before moving on to Namco to do the same for the Afro Samurai games. His dream was apparently, to make "the most awesome fighting game ever," something that he will never be able to do now.

 

Oh how sad.. I really loved his work. ((Sighs)) Rest in Peace Monty, you will be truly missed.

I believe that the human spirit is indomitable. If you endeavor to achieve, it will happen given enough resolve. It may not be immediate, and often your greater dreams is something you will not achieve within your own lifetime. The effort you put forth to anything transcends yourself, for there is no futility even in death.

I remember my brother and I waiting for each installment of Dead Fantasy, with so much hype. We've lost a beautiful person and a true artist.

RIP dude. As a tribute I'm watching DF parts 1-8 over again.

 

Monty was (and is) FGC. As mentionedby our friends in Tekken-Zaibatsu (in SRK's front page post on this), he used to post alot over there back in the mid-2000s and used to play alot to, maining Xiaoyu.

 

RIP, Dead Fantasy was awesome.

 

Dead Fantasy was ahead of its time when there was NOTHING else like that on the internet. He was a visionary and its such a shame to hear he has passed. RIP
