Vegeta or Goku?

Vegeta tells a story of true change and dealing with pride and failure and Goku is great as well for his eternally positive attitude and heartfelt desire to see the best in people and show mercy.
IMO Goku is the best example of what truly being powerful means, to be merciful relaxed/childlike, and kind, all while trying to improve others around you so you can get an even greater challenge. Vegeta shows exactly what happens when one is boisterous, prideful, and self absorbed when they attain power. At first talking shit and being the best is intoxicating and seems cool but eventually that kind of person is humbled and ashamed of what they were.
Both are prime examples of a principle we all should incorporate - to never be satisfied but instead always striving to improve ourselves, even if that means suffering to attain that new level of self improvement.
But in the end Goku is the best because he embodies what real power is, the power to protect, to help others, and be kind. Vegeta himself realizes this is the truth, hence why he changes in the end.
Being an ass when one is powerful is easy but being kind when one attains power is hard. Nothing good ever comes easy.

These two characters are basically what inspired me to become a storyteller, so I've spent a lot of time breaking them down both on a charismatic/entertainment level as well as a symbolic/philosophical level. DBZ is so good at canon-raping itself and has some of the cheesiest writing you can find, even for an anime dub. But in the end, it's the brilliance and charm of the characters that allow me to look past all that and enjoy the series greatly. These two characters basically carry the show, and in the end I'd hate to decide. Both have been (and still are) role models in my life, and I would hate to see DB without either one.

Goku isn't all that merciful if you watch dbz in the japenese dub he is actually kinda of selfish lol

no at a point atleast in the english dub during gokus time on king kais planet they explain the way goku was able to advance so fast. It has an equivalence of training on earth. I mean Gokus training in general is littered with little hacks he did that vegeta simply never had access to, alot of which came in and were only possible when he was dead and then carried over when he came back to life. One hack was when he was going to namek and was able to use senzu beans a few times while adapting to gravity training. something vegeta never had access to.

selfish is not the opposite of merciful. That would be vengeful. I would say Goku is the definition of merciful since he let vegeta and napa walk away, was going to let the ginyu force walk, and freeza go after killing krillin/his people/vegeta/piccolo/all nameks etc etc and multiple other villians many times after that.

DBZ will to me always be the english dub with full bruce falconer music, just like I watched every day afterschool on toonami. The japanese version simply doesnt compare ^O^*



As a side I will say I was always a bigger fan of vegeta what with his thirst and struggle for power and the loss he always felt. I used to always see Goku as too much of a boyscout and plotpower. But as I got older and stronger myself and rewatched the series I came to really appreciate goku. Even Jesus talks about how getting to heaven is much easier when one is poor (weak) vs when one is rich (powerful). Staying level headed when you get strong is no small feat which I think is something DBZ goes on about at length. Just look at how all the villians act. Goku doent let it get to his head which is a feat that is very rare in any field.

Goku let Vegeta walk away because he wanted to fight him again not cuz he was merciful, the english dub completety changed the lines in that part, if u finished watching dbz watch kai its more true to the manga

Im 99% sure king kai planet does not give 1000 in 6 months otherwise he would of surpassed frieza and cell, as a super saiyan he trained 1 day in the Rosat and got 1 years worth of training but was still no match for cell, so you see what i mean? XD

Vegeta's VA doesn't do as good a job in Kai. He sounds too old and worn out nowdays.

I think only Gohan comes even slightly close to that, but it doesn't feel as effective.
