Odd. I never realized that the polygon count of visible parts of the body changed with different outfits.

It's with several outfits and several characters visible. Two more examples for the shoulders:

Why has the nude model less polygons, when all attention lies on only that nude model?

Any racing game enthusiasts with us? :)
Here is a cool graphical comparison of the three biggest and most recent racing games Forza 6 (Xbone), Driveclub(PS4) and Project Cars(PC and consoles):


Forza 6 (though brand new) and especially Project Cars imho look a bit dated... Though Forza 6 runs at least in 60fps, which, as far as I know, DC and PC don't.

I do own Drive Club and I can confirm, it looks gorgeous at times. I stole these screenshots from Neogaf:

I just hope Gran Turismo gets rid of those PS2 era cars and tracks. I remember how floored I was when I saw GT3 back in 2001. I was so proud of myself when I bought my PS2.

The facial animations in the eyebrows, eyes, and mouths are subtle but they really add up to give a more human-like feel to the DOA characters

Yes, that's supposed to be a PS4 game...
In motion it does imho look even worse. Here's the teaser trailer from the TGS Sony press conference:


The game would have better stayed in 2D sprites... :/

Why, because everything is dark, wet and shiny? Or are you talking about the gameplay?
I'm really glad and pleased at the same time, to see, what Team Ninja can do graphically and stylistically with a true PS4 game. They seem to be back to their old form, when they had some of the best graphics in the industry.

Getting back to the KOFXIV desaster... The sprites of XII and XIII looked so great, with such simplistic yet iconic character designs:

It's not that easy to port this same simplicity and style into 3D, yes, but as especially Guilty Gear Xrd but also Street Fighter V proved, it is possible.

This site shows, how much time, thought and polish went into the sprites. You can't say that of the 3D graphics at all.

Honestly the first thing I thought when I saw the trailer was "Shittier Tekken" in terms of the way the characters looked.

What I don't get, why do the characters look so shitty all of a sudden? These are experienced developers, they employ experienced artists. I know, SNK's team and budget is small. But all this has nothing to do with a sense of style, which they seem to have lost completely all of a sudden. This looks so amateurish, I'm actually offended. I did my bachelor thesis in character design and illustration and the character design of Japanese 2D fighters was among my inspirations and among the styles, that I commended and defended in my thesis. (Most European art colleges/universities look at everything resembling manga style with greatest disgust, whereas Western comic style is perfectly fine.)
I' can only dream of being able to work for my favorite Japanese developers in the future...and then I see a reputable developer dish out such shitty design, which even I could have done better with my limited experience and talent. :/

I'm hoping that this isn't the final product, and perhaps they'll to improve the graphics over time. But this could be the final look....I'm not very impressed with it, it looks so bland and generic, like this is an urban Marvel vs Capcom 3. :-/
