FFXIII had great characters, it just had a shit story that made no fucking sense whatsoever and got worse with XIII-2, then tried to redeem itself with LR but ended up getting even worse.

I can see that, but to be honest...I don't think any FF game honestly had a great story...
To me, it seems like it's more character-driven then plot driven and I see exactly as that for XIII and it's sequels.
Hell, I love FFIX as it's my favorite FF of all time but even I can say the plot isn't what made the game, it was the characters and events that did that.

I know all about fandom hate, my favourite FF game ever is Lightning Returns and my favourite character is Lightning.

Light and the XIII saga are probably the most hated in the entirety of FF lol.
Lightning isn't hated. It's quite the opposite.

Ignorant bandwagon fanboys aside, the more open-minded fans just think she's outgrown the world she spawned from and believe she should expand to other universes, much like Morrigan did from the Darkstalkers series and Harley Quinn did from Batman TAS.

As you may have noticed, she was so well-received as a guest in FFXIV that they're doing the Lightning event a second time. If that's not a sign she's not hated, I dunno what is.

I keep hearing how the cast is the worst in the series...but no one ever gives any true reasons rather than what they heard.
And after giving the series another run, I'm beginning to think much of the hate is undeserved.

Sure enough, there have been better attempts to flesh out the overall cast in past games, but come on now... not a single one of them are any worse than Kimahri from Final Fantasy X, who was essentially Mareg from Grandia 2 minus the personality and weak-ass Blue Magic that can only be used as Limit Breaks.

Hell, even Quistis and Seifer got the short end of the stick in character development for FFVIII, and they had a lot of potential to go somewhere with it. But in the end they just got blown by the wayside as mere cannon fodder, forcing the Squall/Rinoa relationship dynamic with little tension. It got to a point where you could hardly believe Rinoa and Seifer were once in a relationship (or if that even existed at all), and Quistis hardly put up a fight trying to win Squall's effections even though she admitted it outright.

Oh, and don't get me started on their attempt to give the four orphans from Final Fantasy III "character" in the remake. That's like trying to make sense with a plot that's hardly different from Final Fantasy I using four unnamed characters from out of nowhere...

When you compare it to these flaws in character development, the cast of FFXIII doesn't nearly sound so bad.

Everyone treats Autobattle as it's the thing that annihilate all tension in the battle, despite how bad it really is and it's the fancy equivalent of pressing X on the attack button with Memory option enabled.
I had no qualms with this battle system heavily inspired by the Grandia and (to an extent) the Tales series. What I did have an issue with was the lack of variety and the need to keep the party leader alive or it's game over.

FFXIII-2 - despite having a weaker story - addressed all the issues I had with that, and I thoroughly enjoyed its execution of the battle system at that point. I'd even go so far as to say that game had the best DLC of that particular year.

Lightning Returns is the best one though, I'm glad the made it tbh its almost perfectly catered towards me lol.

Although 3 games in 3-4 years was a bit much it STILL isn't as milked as VII is.

2 prequels, original game, sequal movie, a sequal game of the sequel movie, a remaster, a mobile game based on the bike chase in Japan, and the newest addition of a remake for what I'm guessing is for the 20th anniversary.

difference being we got ff8-12 in between those spinoffs. where as with 13 its next two sequels were the next mainline games. from 2009 to 20011 you were pretty fucked if you didn't like lightning as that was all there was.

X had a good story and it's one of the most memorable for me.
I agree, Final Fantasy X had a very unique story and a lot of unexpected turns and twists.

Final Fantasy 7 has the most complex characters if you pay attention to the huge number of characters only having minor roles but in fact a huge backstory.

Most complex? Nah, FF7's characters are memorable but out of complexity, only Cloud and Tifa really qualify...

Aerith suffers from Gwen Stacy syndrome(NOT for what you think, it's for turning a character that wasn't pure into a Pure Character that can do no wrong), Barret really gets no real characterization after his stint with Dyne, Cid is mainly for his dream, Yuffie and Vincent is literally just there and Cait Sith is deep for his character type(Red isn't as bad but he's just meh to me).

Yuffie does have SOME sort of exposition though, she's trying to save her village even though it means taking Materia and not only that she's literally the only one that actually cries when Aerith dies...

That's to me of course but complexity is still a broad brush dude.
You apprently never had any contact with the FFVII universe outside of the game. Not to mention Denzels story in "On the Way to a Smile". The many informations about the charakters you can find are often cut from the main story. You really should have visited the Cetra connection community back in the days.

At least we see her cry. If you have Tifa around we can see her run off, with a hand in front of her face, so she's crying or about to cry too.

Not really a fan of using novella to explain backstory on the characters and such really. I kinda rail on Halo for that now considering how much it changes how Master Chief is when you read the past books yet couldn't do anything but make him a stoic who barely says anything to make him unique past feats until Halo 4.

I've heard really bad things about squenix's "FFX-3" book..thing.. that was released after the HD remaster. Most people that read it were saying stuff like "I'll pretend I didn't read this."
