The Art Style and Graphics Discussion

It's a really good looking game, but to be honest, I'm not that impressed. ;) I actually watched the "game movie" of Rise of the Tomb Rider about a week ago:

I really like to watch these game movies of AAA games that I won't ever play myself, because I'm either not interested in the genre or because I don't own the platform. Gives me a good overall view of a game. It's not just cutscenes but also connecting parts of gameplay. I found Lara's hair to be amazing this time. In the last game the hair tech still looked a bit janky but now it looks and moves really nice.

Just completed the story a moment ago. The game can be really beautiful when it wants to be. Not to mention how fun it was. I love how her hair flows around.

ike the way Kasumi clenches her fist here

Or she's just scratching her knee... ;)

On another note, I finally got The Witcher 3 (at a Black Friday sale). Which was long overdue, since open world fantasy RPGs are among my most favorite genre of games. The gameplay is certainly great. One of the best Western RPGs ever made, as most of the reviews out there will tell you too. I was however disappointed by the visuals... :( Most of all of the pure technical aspect. Overall the game looks pretty and very atmospheric. But on a closer look there's a lot of bad texturing, low polygon models and pop ins and outs of these. The level of detail drops fast just a few feet away. Also some effects like bodies of water or rain do look kinda bad. In this regard it perfoms visibly worse than other open world games this generation on console, like Batman Arkham Knight or even GTA V (PS4) or the still very unoptimized demo of FFXV Duscae. In the Witcher's big medieval city of Novigrad the framerate is just as bad as in Duscae...even after lotsa patches. Imo the Witcher sometimes just looks like a slightly nicer PS3/Xbox360 game. Like a more color saturated, warmer Skyrim in HD maybe.

Here some quick screens that I did today. Remember, I can't help but take pictures that let a game look it's very best, so you won't see any of the ugly stuff:

By the way, this is how the game was initially intended to look like, before the significant graphical downgrade (that the whole internet was raging over) had to be made on consoles and PC:

Well, maybe on the PS5 then. ;)

I've been considering getting the witcher 3 for a while now. Maybe now that its cheap I should get it.

When I get a PS4 I'm thinking of getting this...

I recommend getting it, even more so for the great deals you can now get. Even full price it is worth every penny. It's huge and immensely engrossing, even if it's not the most beautiful. ;) The standard edition even includes a physical soundtrack CD with over 30 tracks and a thank you letter by the developers. That's something new, lol. XD

As a bonus two more pics:

still beats paying however much seperately
Here in the US you save $35 with the game being $30 new and the dlc being $65.

Idk I found it disappointing, it's the exact same disc and packaging but with "game of the year" at the top on the game cover and some slips with codes inside. :/ Was $35 on sale at walmart black friday but I didn't want to die for it trampled by people getting TV's lol

this shows how different things are here lol
DLCs are £11.99 each and the base game is £26.86, to buy the game and DLCs seperately would cost £62.83($94.75) when GOTYE costs £49.99($75.39) and that includes the dumb Deluxe stuff.

That's interesting buying everything separate is almost exactly the same within a few cents (with conversion) but the GOTY costs more. Looks like GOTY wasn't price adjusted as well, should have been £39.99.

You should have done thumbnails or at least used a spoiler with this post. Since I'm on the laptop now and not my phone I noticed you made this gif enormous, I saved it to see how big it is and it's nearly 15mb O_O No wonder my phone was lagging so hard with this and the screenshots.

Anyway, I figure I'll post about two of my favorite indie games. First is Hohokum which is a BEAUTIFUL game with incredible music:

I have a few gifs made of Hohokum but I'll post just one I really like

I seriously can't recommend this game enough. My only gripe is it's short.

Second game is Sound Shapes which is a game about creating levels with music coins and shapes/decorations. You can upload them and play other people's levels and there are a lot of extremely spectacular and creative ones. These are all screenshots from levels I've made (ignore the black frames FSD light users...TV display area issues and I'm not cropping them all):

My bf made a creepy abandoned hospital level and published it for halloween and I insisted on adding a hidden tunnel to this screen I made for people to hopefully stumble across

I removed the gif for you. :3

I hope you guys don't mind some more Witcher screens, which show off the very atmospheric moods the weather and night and day switch can generate. Even though other parts of the game do look a little rough this aspect is to my knowledge so far unmatched in any other game.

What you can't see on this picture but have to experience in the game, the trees and the crops are swaying like crazy in the wind when there is a storm. Very impressing and menacing. Generally you never really feel safe too far out of cities and towns. Inside the city walls everything feels cosy and secure.

So the Witcher just won GOTY (game of the year) at the Video Game Awards. :)

One more reason for you guys that are interested to buy it! It really is a great game. And this is coming from someone who wasn't a Witcher series fan before. It's like Peter Molyneux's Fable, just much more polished, overall much better, far bigger and freer...and a little more grittier. Though it also is lighthearted and funny at times. After playing about 40 hours I also have to revise my initial judgement of the game's visuals a bit, I guess... >__> It still does look a little rough in some places on closer view...but overall the visuals keep on giving and giving. And towards the end game content my jaw keeps on hitting the floor more and more regular. The world and it's atmosphere is just so astounding... A last couple of screens that I made to proof this to you:

This thread is basically a one man show. Oh, well...

I got more into the photo mode of Driveclub and especially in that mode, when image quality and level of detail get a nice bump, it looks at times ridiculously good, even photo realistic. Some photos that I took:

DRIVECLUB™_20151210033025.png

DRIVECLUB™_20151211022449.png

It's really a hassle to get the photos as perfect as possible. Like in real life photography... I sometimes worked up to 10 minutes on one photo, to get the right car in the right setting, from the right angle at the right time of day with the right lighting and so on. I have definitely too much free time at the moment. XD
