So Freaking Metal! (A Metal Thread)

So I don't know how many of you listen to metal, but I'm an avid music fan; I listent to literally almost anything, as long as, musically, it is good. I play guitar, and have been playing for a couple years now. I love music theory and I love how fuckin' metal. I think most current day talented guitarists, bassists, and drummers are in the metal genre, not that they don't exist in other genres as well. Not to not give credit to metal singers or singers at all, because singing well is fucking hard, I just know that most metal bands, while having guitarists who are ridiculously good, have singers who are mediocre to just good. I'm such a metal-head, that my name, UnD34D, came from being such a Marilyn Manson fan/Bram Stoker fan, that I dressed in all black and looked very undead a lot, so just decided to use it as my gaming pseudonym.

Now that I'm done with a personal intro, I just wanted to start a metal thread, to discuss metal your into and whats coming out, as well as concerts, since half of loving metal is going to a concert and fucking moshing your face off.

Right now, I'm very heavy into Mastodon. I seriously can't get enough of them. I've loved them since I discovered them in 2007, with their album Blood Mountain. Their newest album, The Hunter, is a huge departure from Blood Mountain. They've gone from really fast metal to a more heavy, disonant metal, but they really do both just amazingly. I honestly recommend any of their CD's, but some singles to check out:

Black Tongue - The Hunter

The Hunter is probably my #1 album of 2012.

Type O Negative got some metal songs too, mostly a mix of punk and doom. Everyone should listen to Type O at least once in their life.

Anything by Boltthrower. Absolutely anything they do. Especially IVth Crusade. Their 40K album is a classic.

I got couple of death metal bands too, but I mostly keep em to myself. I haven't listened to em in a while actually.

Do they have a hardcore metal scene in Japan?

Good post Kitchener, I'll definitely give Boltthrower a listen when I get home from work today. I've listened to some Type O Negative before. I'm still on the fence about them. They did a cover of some song, can't remember what offhand, that I really didn't like though. Venom is pretty sick. Now I feel like a loser because I didn't youtube link anything (and to be honest I don't know how to link it and make it words ). As for a metal scene, up in northern Japan, not even close. Everything up here, including the women, are all about hip-hop or j/k-pop. I don't mind it, like I can dougie and I can do the party shuffle, but it gets really old really fast, and in terms of music theory, it is just really unimpressive.

As for Awesmic, I didn't know you listened to any metal. I agree with Kitchener on this too, DF counts for sure, but they are almost definitely a one-hit wonder, and vastly overrated. You can find videos of them messing up live, and their singer is terrible live, but I'm not here to insult any metal really, I definitely have like, 2 DF CD's on my iPod, so I mean, I do listen to them.

Another classic band I'd like to throw out that is just some really good listening is Pantera. I don't care if you think they are old or overrated, Pantera is just heavy metal that rocks. Classic Southern Metal with amazing songs like "Fucking Hostile" and "Broken."

One more band I'd like to throw out there, Sky Eats Airplane. They have a lot of computerization in their music, but honestly, it is just really awesome. They have a good mix of screaming, growls, and singing, as well as sick riffs that will just stay in your brain.

I agree, Judas Priest is awesome. Is Eisbrecher pronounced "ice breaker?" Because if so, that's fucking awesome, and very, very metal. I've never heard of Turmion Katilot or Eisbrecher though. What kind of metal is it?

More like "eyes-brecker," though it does translate into English as "Ice Breaker." It's part of the Neue Deutsche Härte genre.
Turmion is a Finnish metal band. I believe they'd be categorized under "Industrial metal."

Yeah, DF have some fucking terrible live shows and they constantly rerecord different instruments multiple times in the studio, which is why they don't have any decent studio versions of their songs.

If you're referring to their album which was full of Black Sabbath covers, then yeah, no Type O fan actually likes that album and I think it was one of their first too. Cinnamon Girl is a good cover. Paranoid is only partially covers Iron Man is also a good song on it's own. Overall, their best songs are those which are the most intimate ones. Bloody Kisses, October Lust and World Coming Down is three of their best albums in my opinions.

Also, everyone knows Pantera is still the shit.

I missed TDWP 3 years ago. Last year I missed Asking Alexandria (That was the other band I meant to put in there), but I got to see TDWP.

I only started listening to OMM after this years Warped, I didn't really like them before that either. Hearing things live is such a different experience. I've started listening to a lot I never thought I would after hearing it live.

I know what you mean, I hated metal period before I saw it live. I mean I liked hard rock, but not like metal. I loved Manson, and went to Ozzfest when I was 12, with Chevelle, Disturbed, Manson, Korn, and Ozzy as the line-up (KoRn and Manson were my favorite bands at the time) and I still hated "metal." Then my uncle took me to a Slipknot concert and I was forever hooked. Say what you want about Slipknot, I still love them to this day, and the put on one hell of a show. Not to mention I'm from Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Slipknot used to come there all the time and just hang out and play at this little dive bar, and when they were finished would just chill with people. I have a ton of shit from them signed.

They have some metal tracks but its mostly hard rock, still good for sure. My guitar is very similar to Slipknot/Stone Sour's guitarist Jim Wood, a tele with some beef added to it for a real heavy sound.

Like I said, I listen to everything, and we can definitely discuss any music anyone here listens to, but I'd like to stay within the realm of rock. I mean fuck, when I went into the Navy I was a punk for sure, 12 inch mohawk, cut up skinny jeans, and when I get out I'm growing my hair back out.

If you like heavy stuff, there's Crowbar and their shit is Hard and Slow. They change in tempo regularly, but not too fast. Joke is that they're the 'Fat Man' metal band. Common themes in their lyrics are loss, grief, struggle, and all that good stuff.

And then there the Biker Metal, Black Label Society. Their live shows are awesome and they even came over to UK a year or two ago. They even had a few tracks and performed live with Ozzy (back when he could actually stand). 1919*Eternal is my favourite album. "FUCK LIMP BIZKIT. Get that wigger shit outta here!". Don't like their new stuff too much, but they're still fun to listen.

I'm still diggin' through my old shit, so I might find some bands I still like.

I'm in love with them. I would see 'em any time they were near when I was stateside. The first time I saw 'em live at Warped and he cracked the beer, chugged it and started singing The New Black, I was hooked.
