There wasn't a single female player in existence as of the recording of that show who actually deserved to be on there.
Wrong from the British line up. Both Sarah and Ruth in season 2 were brutal players when I met them. They destroyed their competition and played on par with the males.
As I recall SarahLou took on Messy after the tournament section and it went 3-2.
I think right now people are getting too heated about this entire thing. It has become a debate instead of a discussion.
Someone made a point that the FGC is a hard one to come into? I disagree. I joined and spoke to a lot of high level players when I was a noob, I managed to miss a lot of the scrub phase as I understood that my opponent wasn't cheating, they were better than me.
The point is most communities are open to people of all skill levels, you just have to want to improve. And that is key! Because if you are creating a more social experience, which I'm going to assume this female DOA group is now, then skill and improvement is not the focus, it is the game being played. This is the vibe I get from your posts so if I am wrong I am sorry about that.
The one thing I'm not happy about seeing was the little comment about
"We also have practice sessions where males come in and teach the girls Basic Strats to the game"
Wow... now that is sexist. I'm male and I was taught the game by 3 people in my time training. Thanks to 1 of those, who was male, I got the basic system down and he helped me out a lot.
Thanks to the other 2 I was able to become a competitive player and got a 2nd in 1 tournament with my Tina. Both of these were female. My friends list for DOA4 was about a 50/50 split. Your sex does not matter! Sure men can be a bit more competitive by nature but what it all came down to was self-improvement and just being a nice person.
My final note on this would be, I never struggled to join in as part of any FGC because I loved the genre and I loved the games I played. I never struggled because when I spoke to people I was polite and I tried to put forward information, if it was wrong, it was wrong. When someone else was wrong, because eventually I actually got to a decent level (in the past) I explained why. If you follow simple rules of interaction with people there should be no falling out. Yes you will always get elitism but fuck! People are like that and to bring that in a little more... these usually are male!
TL;DR
Gone slightly off track but... Women can stand their own vs. men. Excluding people from a tournament for their sex and then saying "oh well men can teach us" is bullshit (it is) and we should come together as a community. Treat people with respect and act like a bloody grown up. Someone is wrong, explain, don't bitch.
