The Story doubled as a pseudo-tutorial with optional training objectives for each fight, but the Tutorial mode you see in Last Round was not in the vanilla release.
There was no F2P/Core Fighters version of DOA5 vanilla. In fact, there were no DLC characters at all in vanilla. Alpha, Gen Fu and the VFs were locked. Everyone else was available to all players at the start.
You had to re-buy the game if you wanted all the features, although Core Fighters came out at the same time as 5 Ultimate, so you could technically download that and play Kasumi, Ayane, Hayate and Hayabusa free with those who upgraded to 5U.
When LR was released, there was a free update on previous gen consoles that updated 5U to a gimped version of LR. Raidou and Honoka had to be purchased separately, however.
It was a good idea but not executed all that well...
All my friends treat Fighting Games like every other game they've played... as if Story Mode is the main Attraction no matter how many times I've tried to warn them.
Story Mode is the main attraction to many people tho and there's nothing wrong with that. I really liked the story mode ngl was a bunch of fun and it's even better when you n your friends play it it's a nice laugh
