those are all legacy games with over 20+ years of characters to pick from, Grand blue versus is the first videogame coming from a franchise that's rather new, of course it's initial roster is not gonna compare

besides, small roster on launch means nothing these days will DLC and re-releases, so eventually it'll get bigger

Granblue has 100s of characters with more being added every week (variations of existing characters & new ones), I'm not surprised VS started with a small roster. It's probably hard to pick characters from all of them that could fit in, they probably wanna take their time with picks. They need to have in mind popularity, fighting style & compare with other characters that are similar to see which one ends up in VS.

Also DBFZ has already confirmed a 3rd season pass, so I'm sure VS will get more than 2 too, especially considering how loved Granblue Fantasy is in Japan.

To be fair, most ArcSys games these days start with a small roster: KLK:IF had 12 out of which 2 were just the same characters but with a dual-blade style/technique, BBTAG had 20 with 20 other characters being released in 3-4 character character packs, Granblue already had 2 season passes announced 3 months before the game was even released (I mean, ok, Belial seems to have a pretty big role in the story

so it makes sense that he would end up being a playable character but still), apparently Xrd Sign only had like 14 playable characters at start as well, no doubt that Strive shall have 20 or under 20 characters that a player could choose from in the beginning. Despite all of this, their season passes or bundles are relatively cheap, got REV 2 for like 15 euros on Steam with all the playable characters, and you can

get the 9 new BBTag characters for 20 euros on PS4, while in other fighting games they usually release 5-6 characters in a Season Pass for the same price pretty much, so the small starting roster doesn't bother me as much as it used to a couple of months earlier.

Not just Arcsys but pretty much every fighting game company does this, heck even Capcom launched SFV with just 16 characters, but look at 'em now, the game has a whooping 40, that's why getting pissy over small launch rosters is pointless, eventually they're gonna add more. the only time this doesn't happen is if said game dies before it can add more (marvel infinite) or if it's some small indie fighting game

I’m just mad that they’re starting out with 11 characters then have the nerve to announce not one, but TWO season passes before the game even releases. What kind of message do you think that gives to the players?

It sucks that this barebones base game nonsense is going to be the future of fighting games because there’s clearly a ton of people supporting that trash business model judging by how well GBFVS sold. Pretty anime visuals do not make a game, and an 11-character roster in 2020 ain’t it either. ASW isn’t some broke indie company.

GBFVS sold well solely because of it being GBF along an ArcSys game. Like DBFZ. ArcSys + popular franchise = huge sales. If the game lacked any of these (it was developed by other company, was based on another franchise or both at the same time) I doubt it would've sold this well.

People hate Season Passes. I don't mind them cause I love long term game support tbh, but it did truly feel scummy for GBFVS because it's like, was it THAT hard to add the Season Pass 1 characters to the base game + Belial (since he IS in the game) and start from SP2?
