rather than small teams of wildly diverse characters I much prefer team based fps when it's large teams of the same character with the only difference being the gun you're carrying, but they don't make those kinds of games anymore, too old fashioned I guess

Overwatch & Splatoon realistically are your only options for that type of gameplay. That is unless you want to play something more like Halo Infinite, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, 2, Destiny 2, Apex Legends or Valorant if you're on PC.

You could try Enemy Territory, a team-based Wolfenstein spinoff for free (on Steam). Or Quake, Team Fortress 2, Arma, Squad, Ground Branch, and especially Splitgate and Intruder (Sorry, lots of good stuff, except Halo and its current meme studio)
