I think a lot of people like DMC3 heavily because of that Vergil hype. Most DMC games are a bit mid as action games. DMC1 was basically a hack n' slash Resident Evil (which was fine for its time), DMC2 was a mess, and DMC4 made the terrible design decision of making you effectively play the game twice (albeit as two different characters). DMC5, almost by default, is the best DMC game.

Unironically, DmC is actually pretty decent in itself, aside from the highly ill-advised misstep of turning Dante into a punk teenager, when there was already "badass" Dante available as a character to utilise.

it's weird because DMC3 Vergil is so different from every other iteration oh him, in DMC3 he's looks cool, but he's obviously flawed, he's short sighted, impulsive, impatient, naive, the man actually has some layers and depth, but then after his initial appearance he's just the unflappably cool demon slayer guy with a katana

now that I say it out loud shadow the hedgehog had the same character arc lol

but yeah in talks with people about my gripes with DMC3, 99% of the time the response is "oh there's a mod for that", so after doing some digging I realized that DMC3 has a very active modding community that are constantly altering the game to make it more playable and fun, and while I can appreciate that it does make me wonder how much of DMC3's praise is from what it actually is or what fans think it should be

DMC3 was a landmark title that changed the character action gaming landscape forever so obviously it has merit, but the way people talk up DMC3 when they themselves have their experience heavily colored by fan mods, it just makes me dubious of their claims

I don't like DMC, but I tolerate it. Never have cared for the humor or the characters on top of it. DMC4 was by far my least favorite. I know DMC2 was shat on, but I actually liked it. DMC3 was indeed the best game in the franchise history.

My gripes with DMC4 Dante is that the character feels bad to play if you don't actively try and use style switch or try to learn how to play like Donguri since most enemies are obviously designed for Nero, so Dante has to get a bit more creative in regards to how he handles these enemies. Without learning style switch and how to properly use it as a combo/juggling tool Dante just feels weak in 4 as opposed to 3.

This is also made worse by the fact that Dante's segments are Nero's but in reverse, its obvious that Dante was an afterthought in that game which is still crazy to me that the character's gameplay ended up being as good as it is. As for DMC5 Dante, haven't gotten to his chapters yet, I do hope that he is stronger than 4 Dante, learning how to properly utilise style switch in order to have fun playing the character
