If you've been around long enough you've definitely seen what happens when a franchise, subculture, or hobby that's kinda niche gets mainstream appeal and get run over by, for lack of a better word, normies, they flood it and most times end up pushing the old gaurd out who've been repping since day 1, however niche hobbies that lean on the hypersexual tend to be left out of this equation

that's because as much as the masses love following trends, they don't like being thought of as being unambiguously perverted, so in a way, a focus on fanservice tends to scare away whatever mainstream appeal said niche hobby could have, and it never has to worry being overrun by trend chasers

so thank you DOA, for keeping our community genuine with your obsession with jiggle physics and panty shots

I don't know... I'd say that despite any level of "focus" on the fanservice, the series has always still managed to attract many socially "normal" or "well-adjusted" people (which I dont mean in either a positive or negative way), some who ignore the fanservice and some who sometimes have spoken out against it and wanted change

I do think there is a bit of a misunderstanding to it all, but as well as some understanding to it.

On my end, jiggle physics and ass physics is a 10/10 big win for example on fanservice, but I always believed panty shots are ridiculously cringe and can give people the wrong impression of what DOA is just based off that.

Because you can totally can appreciate fanservice if it's towards the standard of sex appeal. First Descendant & Stellar Blade are examples of fanservice done right in my opinion, everything else after may potentially come off as borderline weird or unnecessary because there will come a point where you do need players to grow.

Panty shots have always been easy to explain as unintentional... every FG has them. Realistically, if you're gonna have characters wearing dresses or skirts you're gonna get them (thats what I told a non-gamer relative once who saw me play and asked "why can I see their underwear?", Im like "why wouldnt you?" lol), unless they decide to black hole that area or something like in Smash which is actually weirder, imo.

As long as the camera isnt zooming in on the panties it's not really a panty shot tho is it? lol. It's kinda like asking "why do those women have boobs?", should they not have them? XD Sometimes the accusation of "perversion" should fall solely on the viewer's perspective, not the content its self.

@inochinagi I do think DOA is more obvious with it though. Least previously or currently. In DOA5 you were able to change the color for underwear, which can lead to interpretations to the player of what that actually entails to / imply. In other games, it's not exactly an implementation but more so a player thing. Whereas some games are either hinting at it for some subtle feature.

To the average fighting game player, specifically DOA, people typically won't notice it until someone pauses the game and turns the camera mode on, which is basically a "gotcha" moment of what a panty shot is for the most part. DOA in my opinion, can be rather obvious with it via clothing physics. I think panty shots just flat out existing is cringe, but that's just me.

Then again, underwear cosmetic features I have no care for. DOA female characters in the fighting game versions legitimately have no ass or ass physics anyway, there's nothing to look at.

Even if panty shots is not inherently a feature and just some random human mindset, it does have a far more negative connotation behind it at a worse pace for DOA compared to other games since DOA can be pretty obvious with it.

Oh, if you meant people using photo mode to take panty shots and share them online, yeah I could see that as cringy, same with all those ryona videos, but then people find a way to make those with almost any popular FG too. Soulcalibur has also always had moves like Sophitia's Heaven's Arch which a lot of her fanartists love to draw, lol (and you can change underwear colour in SC too)
