How about you have them do their character's combo trials everyday until they can do them without trouble and the intro tutorial. They both helped me tons.
One of them regularly plays the combo challenges where the other tries to learn the main combos of a character. Combos are good and all, but they honestly are only a small fraction of actual fighting. I can beat players without ever doing combos. Teaching fundamentals is key.
This is what I did with the SoCal scene before I moved out to NorCal; Play hard, force them in those difficult situations such as zoning, whiff punishment, and throw punishment. I've done this constantly so I'd beat it in their heads that this is what fundamentals are.[cont]
I would explain to them what's considered throw punishment, and how to properly throw punish. I'd explain what the neutral game is, and how it works. How important spacing is, and how important it is be aware of the environment, and how to use it. [cont]
I'd play everyone EVERY WEEK at casuals, play hard against them so they learn how to deal with footsies and proper play methods. And I critique their play on request if I feel the need that I really should do so. Most would actually ask to play me to see if they are improving a bit or a lot. And most actually have, which I've been proud to see. They look up to me.
I would also, literally sitdown with someone and give them a rundown about CQC neutrals for their character. And even give advice about certain stuff to work with in the lab. As well have them work on combos that are NOT combo trials.
I think an issue I'm having is that the only characters I can teach are Ayane, Kasumi, Hitomi or Momiji. I dunno how to teach someone like Ein, LeiFang, Sarah, Rig, etc.
