Get the 290x. Ever since the 970 fiasco and the 300 series nearby amd dropped the price of the 290x like crazy. You can pick it up for like 280-300 bucks and its only about 10% slower than the 970. Only downside is that it is an oven and uses a lot of power.

I wouldn't get the gtx 970, its a beast for the price but it also has gimped memory. Gtx 970 = 3.5gb Master Race xD Rather you wait for the 380x/390 Gtx 970 would be excellent for you though if you don't play at resolutions higher than 1080p. 1440p is fine but the gimped memory does cause...
