yeah, i guess it is similar to OG MvC where you have your point characters and your assist characters, and now that I think about it that would be a cool way to incorporate the already huge MK roster, bring some characters as fully playable point characters and bring back some simply as assists...

MK9 had a tag team mode where you played 2 characters and you could call on your partner for assists to extend your combos, extend your pressure, enhance your zoning, enhance you mix ups, etc. so i guess it's based on that
