Also, even though DOA2U is still my favorite DOA too, I think the series actually did well with DoA1 and DoA2, and it actually really took off with DoA3 as it sold over a million units in 4 months on a just released console, and it was the first game in the series to have a tournament scene.

There's actually more than a million DoA fans out there with potential to return whenever DoA comes back stronger, whither it be months or years from now. It won't be never. And it's not like we have to be actively playing a DoA all the time, whither it be 2 or 3 or 5, to still love the series...
