A Discussion of sexualised design of male/female characters

Lara Croft isn't sexualised as much now in the traditional sense, she has a pretty face and butt and that's mostly it.

Lara is extremely pretty this game even more so than classic Lara but she also doesn't rely on skimpy clothes.

Using a similar tactic to Uncharted here, Lara is wearing a roughed up look and just wearing a grey sweater with a button or two undone this pretty hot Imo.

The first part before you get to the semi open hub world is the only time you see her wear the traditional tank in the game, and even then this remarkably toned down compared to earlier games.

If we're talking about ideal characters we like and how sexualized they can be, these are examples of what please my eyes...

Aesthetically wise, I prefer more leg focus...I find long legs and costumes that show a good view of them a lot more attractive than just breasts and cleavage. I also like long hair, which to me adds sex appeal to the character, if it's at the correct length and not too short or long, and I love frilly dresses and lolita inspired fashion because of it's modesty and classy appearance, and it's simplistic and minimalistic color schemes. If a costume had to be revealing, I'd like a work of art like this:

Although most would deem this costume revealing and slutty, I real don't see it that way. It's like a masterpiece to me, and really reflects Lili's background and personality well and even has some class and elegance to it I really like. I honestly would love for it to return in Tekken 7.( I also was going to post Amy from SC as an example, but I didn't want to weird anyone out since she's really young...)

See this more like what I like (though I do love me some Makoto Nanaya)

I agree with both of you. I like my female characters classy and shit, but I also do like the trashy look like below:

My favorite Ivy is still from SC2.

But I love all of these costumes

Although if I had to choose between both, I'd pick the classy look.

I saw these pictures on Facebook and thought they would make an interesting discussion piece.

Which version do you personally like best?

Saber: #1 or 2. She has no curves to show off, it's kinda disgusting.
Lancer: #4. I mean, if you're gonna take the trashy way, might as well fully embrace it and go all out instead of only doing it halfway like #2 and 3.

As a long long time fan of the series, her new face (and personality) put me off because it looked nothing like her old one but I grew to like it considering it's a reboot and she's meant to be much younger and more fresh-faced.

I find sexuality interesting with how you can show two people the same thing and depending on aesthetic preferences they've picked up over time they can have completely different reactions. I like body hair, someone else might be disgusted by it. Some people really like Nicki Minaj's rear while others are put off by it.

I just call her Tiffany Croft, Laras younger sister lol. She looks and acts nothing like Lara.

As for shit like Nicki Minaj, she's only impressive to entirely white communities full of skinny girls. I'm around blacks and Mexicans and thick white girl, and so Nikki is nothing special to me

Speaking about male sexualization on the previous page...what's up with Capcom and what they do to Resident Evil's Chris Redfield?

Chris is one of my all time favorite characters. When you think about it, the form fitting shirt with his BSAA outfit can come off as sexualizing. The focal point in that picture is obviously those arms. Even in-game, his chest and abdomen are bulging through the thing. They were doing just fine with that until they made that Warrior outfit for the Gold edition. I personally can't stand it because of the hair and sunglasses; the pants and boots are okay. The sailor one is... meh. Mixed feelings. lol

I think when it comes to character design, the default costumes for most characters in the Resident Evil series have always had this strange, yet no less badass combination of modest, shic and stylish, depending on the fashion time period of each respective game. That's one of the main things that drew me to the series when I grew out of my eccentric anime phase. When they do fanservice-y stuff like that for Chris, It's totally fine, but I usually don't care for it. RE6's alternate costume is my exception. Pink AND blue are awesome and Chris couldn't look cooler with that sword. ;)

Some of these all look like they were pulled right off the girls in DOA, except they're still infinitely more tasteful. I think that uncomfortability you have looking at those is similar to how women may feel playing many games. I actually love those outfits now - thanks for pointing them out! Something to aim for the next time I play any of the REs.

I think RE4 Leon has more female fans than Chris until RE6 Chris Piers gay duo showed up.

I think Leon is the kind of guy women tend to like and Chris is the kind of guy gay men tend to like. (There are of course always exceptions. ;) ) And Capcom seems fully aware of that.

Claire recently got hit with the "sexy" stick as well in REvelations 2, her Cowgirl costume is something else and her classic RE2 costume really puts emphasis on her but.

Moira Burton's Urban Ninja was pretty sexualized as well even going as far as changing her hair to bimbo blonde.

Have you seen preorder dlc for RE Zero HD too? Rebecca gets a cheerleader uniform and Billy gets a topless commando thing.

Chris Redifeld is totally gay, no interest in Jill and that sailor outfit just says it all.

Always looked up to Chris in my teenage years since i was pretty addicted to RE5. Still thought he was gay back then but sailor Chris just says all xD

im really starting to notice the parts of the bodies that you expose to increase the attractiveness, but now im wondering how that works when no skin is exposed

who is the sexist gas mask soldier in your opinion?

I'm gonna assume you meant sexiest lol

If I had to choose it'd be the one on the bottom because the clothes make him look bulkier.

If you want someone fully clothed including their whole head to come off as sexy you need a sexy voice (english Rig or english Rachel for example) or skin tight parts of the outfit showing off arms/torso/legs. Sometimes voice can be everything. Then there's the sillhouettes of the outfits, hourglass shapes for women and big shoulders for guys.

Chris and Leon's character design and their individual way of sexualization is actually quite interesting. Here two of their official renders next to each other in the right height and mass relation:

24186931406_e68ba8f54a_o.jpg

On one hand moderately tall, slender but fit Leon with a fashionable haircut and clothing, a pretty face and a determined, cool glance and then there's tall, super buff Chris, with exposed arms, unruly hair and a grim look on his handsomely rugged face. There are also some other subtle differences in their depiction. For example the soft light of Leon's art and the stark contrast of Chris' art. Or Leon's narrow foot stance and Chris' masculine broad stance. Leon's body is more relaxed, Chris' seems more aggressive. Chris is wearing much more military gear and so on...
In general Leon is the typical Japanese approach for a male video game hero, Chris is typical for the Western approach of a video game hero.
Leon is probably more a hit with the ladies and Chris more with men...gay men. ;)

Less sexualized is fine but my problem is she doesn't even look like the same person. Lara Croft actually had an instantly recognizeable face before (Angelina jolie fit it perfectly XD). But they didn't keep that. Or her personality.

Instead they just made an entirely new character, and called this new girl Lara. I don't like that.

They should have kept Lara's appearance intact.

Let it be known that I am all about Moira. I of course have a fetish for short hair so I loved Rebecca and Sherry before her (I still don't get sherryxjake shippers since the whole campaign was Sherry going "yeah no" to Jake lol).

I hate the revelations games but I'm currently playing through 2 to play as Moira (hate that basically you have to lead with moira/Natalie as scout then switch back to Claire/Barry for combat).

She's a CUTE little shit lol

I didn't know RE Zero hd was a thing. Hope they added online co op. Re games are only really fun for me that way. Otherwise they are just super tedious and boring (EXCEPT Outbreak and ORC which I love with a passion usually reserved for latinas)

To be fair they are equally rugged in RE6.

I like this kind of fan service(if you could call it that). She's conservatively dressed except for the cleavage window and you have to use the rest of your imagination to fill in the blanks. She is well endowed and quite muscular(Her annoying tendencies as a character was overshadowed in RE 6 when she started giving the peoples elbow to zombies)
resident_evil_6_helena_wallpaper_pack_by_fadedblackangel-d5d94un.jpg

Same Deal with Crimson Viper. I thought she looked so badass and sexy when I first saw her. She has skin showing but you still have to put in the effort to fill in the blanks.

Another type of Fanservice I like is when the female characters dress in a scantily clad way as a means to use their sexual power to domineer over you(if that makes any sense) BTW this is the outfit I am using 90% of the time when I play Christie.
