Really? Why is that? Is the game really that bad or something?
The MK fan base is huge, but the competitive scene is small. A lot of the old UMK3 players don't really like MK9 because it's different (although I actually prefer MK9 to UMK3). Also, a lot of the Capcom and Tekken players who jumped on MK9 early have found issues with the game (usually with the frequent patching) and have moved on to more recent releases. The terrible online play didn't help much either.
For me personally, I'd still be playing the game now if you could break throws while guarding, there was no chip damage, and meter wasn't built by making the opponent block. I feel as though if you're blocking, you're losing... and I really like to block.
the guys at VFDC are putting in work, and like DreamCancel, they will get their game played and attract new players, We got Ranbats up here in SF at SouthTown, and VF will be here too. IPlayWinner(Haunt's and co.) are helping both the KOF and VF community grow and there are new players showing up all the time, there is interest in these games...I think they will continue to grow after Evo. They said MK would be dead after Evo....they were wrong, so idk.
1. How is that any different than what happened when VF5 was released years ago? What about VF4? The competitive VF community is too small for VFDC or Southtown to have a significant impact. It certainly doesn't grow my local community (which is heavily SF-based with people "disliking" 100+ moves per character).
2. MK would be dead if not for MLG and Evo. Remove them both from the equation and I highly doubt you'd see even half of the MK tournaments you have right now. And if MLG could get Capcom, I question whether or not they would've bothered with MK or KoF.
As for MK being close to death....I can't say for sure....they have local tournaments and gatherings around my area all the time...people in numbers play that game(60-80 for locals gatherings) so I can't really say it's dying Or maybe Nor Cal has alot of players and a strong community....idk.
If NorCal has such a strong MK scene, why was the game not featured and NCR 10?
I'm curious as to who? I'm guessing PL is in that list but I have a hard time believing any of the VSM guys, 16 bit, Detroit, Slips or even Brady would just drop it...
I haven't talked to PL in awhile, but if I had to guess, I'd assume he's on the list... especially now after MLG. The VSM guys, I couldn't tell you. They've been winning everything, so they have no reason to stop playing as long as there are tournaments. They rarely travel outside of their region, and you hardly see MK tournaments outside of the general east coast area so...
16-bit and Slips just have nothing else to play. I talked to Slips at FR and he didn't really like Tekken 6 and doesn't think TTT2 is looking all that great. Plus, a lot of the old crew from STL no longer plays. I'm sure if Slips ended up liking TTT2, MK would definitely be less of a priority.
Detroit has already started playing SC5 and the only reason he's been keeping up on MK is because of FR, MLG and Evo. If MK was not at MLG, he'd be playing SC5 right now. Same with Morty Seinfeld and his brother Sao87. Brady will probably drop MK if DOA5 is solid.
That might have been the reason why people left at first, but the games last patch was months ago (Dec/Jan I think?) and they've said there wont be anymore for the foreseeable future.
I'm heavily involved with the MK scene in the DC/MD/VA area and I assure you we've been continuously growing every month since the games release.
There have been "stealth" patches since then, which has a lot of players unhappy.
Also, while certain local communities are still growing, it's definitely not common. The AZ scene is down to just the few top players and nothing more. We get 60-man Capcom tournaments, 30-man SC5 tournaments, but only 8-man MK tournaments (down from 30+ at launch). And this is coming from a scene with both Detroit and Morty, two of the top players in the US.
All that said, if DOA5 had the competitive life of MK9, I'd be a happy camper.
