DOA: Flaws and Tournament Viability

Tiers give you knowledge of a characters strength and weakness and how well their tools apply to the mechanics of the game. I don't see why this concept is so difficult to grasp. It's not meant to say "hey these are the only characters who can win."

A simple example would be if most characters can CB in 2-3 hits and get do so in a single input with a sit down set up then they would be higher in the tier compared to someone who could potentially have their CB only done within a combo string and can only CB on the 4th or 5th hit would put them lower on the tier list. Jan Lee is a good example of this. He seems to be the first character so far that has a string that feints into a CB. Can he do that CB in a single input like the other characters or does he have to do that string to get to the CB? If so that limits his setups to lead into that CB. He's forced into that combo string. This would potentially lower him in the tier list.

So to say "tiers mean jack shit" is simply ignorant and you are only leaving yourself in the dark.

Tier list is just a guideline to character strengths and weaknesses and how they stack up against each other. There is nothing stopping the player from using unconventional tools that will allow his character to excel. Rikuto is known for using a low tiered bayman to reck higher tiered characters. It just not as easy to win as those characters with better tools.

OMG you are completely missing the point. If you don't want to inform yourself on game mechanics and character strengths then why are you even in this thread? No one is saying a tier list is the end all be all on who should play what and that skill means nothing. It is simply information. Again, if you wish to live in the dark and not educate yourself then fine, but if you want to be apart of these type of conversations you have to ACKNOWLEDGE that information, not just brush it aside like a typical ignorant scrub.

What does master have to do with ANY of this? Master uses all this information just like any other player out there. He does tier lists and studies the game mechanics just like any other player that wants to compete in a fighting game. You have COMPLETELY missed the point of this conversation. Him having beat Master shouldn't void his opinion; there are people who have that will tell you the same thing.

Saying tiers don't matter then talking down to someone (Who plays Mid tier characters) saying they do because they haven't beat Master (who uses the best character in DOA4) is a little backwards. Not that Master is bad or anything; it's just not a good example

A list made by a bunch of guys that go to tournaments and hit the lab with all the characters. They make all the claims and say who is ass and who is not ass. What do you do? You take that and win a major and tell them to, " Hold that shit!"

But there are flaws to these tournament players making tier lists for fighting game. They are...

- Lacking knowledge of the whole cast and may know only a few of the characters.
-After making said tier list they begin to claim that their main is better than yours because the list.
-And sometimes they got their heads up their asses and really have no clue what they are talking about sometime with some of the characters. Not all.
-Lastly...don't provide any match ups.
-Also forgets if it really matters or not.

Conclusion: If they say your main is trash go body them.

P.S.

Most of these guys that make a tier list WIN a tournament (true story bro). They place...but they are not winning(on a constant basis). Just wanted to say that key point.

For example, when MK9 was still new people bug the hell out of me to drop Jax for Kung Lao since he was the best. I almost did it. Hold it Blaze. He's right. They got a purpose. Use tiers to build your confidence. If Ryu is top tier in DOA 5 boding someone like Master(sorry) or whoever feels like you're the best player in the world. Not only that, characters do have weaknesses and shortcomings.

Jeef: Hold on Jeff. I understand you fully. The SC4 thing is another story, but you are right. characters got positives and negatives. I agree with that.

Tier lists are good at giving people a general idea of how well that character can generally do against another character.

Beyond that, bottom tier can beat top tier based on the players skill level.

That is NOT the point of a tier list. It is a baseline for INFORMATION on characters strengths and weaknesses. It is merely a guide. I'm blown away by how such a simple concept cannot be grasped by you.
